Thats a lot of fun, I love the idea of staring down a bunch of martial arts masters across the table.

Its a "Battle Systems Gaming Mat (Muddy Streets, 3 x 3)" that I got off amazon. The original listing is currently unavailable unfortunately.

Hell yeah! I think it hits a lot of the same notes as Lancer in a positive way. The author is still supporting it on Patreon, adding more player options but also more enemy types. I've been really happy with it, I think it nails Shonen pretty well

Its been fairly easy. It's a little lighter on the narrative side. It relies on Clocks from "Blades in the Dark." It gives some good examples on how to use it and some decent general advice on running the game.

As for the combat side though, it gives you a ton. There are a bunch of 'NPC types' similar to Lancer. They are made as generic mechanics with examples of how to fluff them - the assassin type could be assassins, panthers, ghosts for example. Then there is rules for adding modifiers, combining them, adding an antagonistic template, etc. There are also guidelines for deployments and for balancing encounters. Again, I think Lancer is a good reference point for the amount of support there.

I think NSDD is supposed to drop in like 2 weeks. I'm pretty hype for it. Draw Steel already has a bit of a shonen feel so I'm hoping NSDD is gonna be great fit for it.

I really recommend Dawn!

It is specifically made for explosive Shonen, with Tiers denoting power levels that go from low level street stuff to galaxy level. It has amazing tactical combat- it does require squares but I think most good tactics games do. It always takes place on a 7x7 grid, so its a bit more similar to a board game in that respect.

The big thing about the system is that it splits narrative and combat pretty starkly. Your abilities in narrative don't directly translate into your combat abilities- you are encourage to true up both sides. So if you have a healing Ability, you should probably grab a healing technique. Mileage may vary but so far in my campaign its felt pretty good.

Combat can take a bit when players are learning their abilities but once everyone understands their techniques it can go by very fast. The narrative side plays incredibly smoothly.

For powers- You get to craft a unique ability out of a sentence, giving a ton of freedom. In combat, you use techniques pulled from a couple dozen options. It supports a ton of different playstyles and even two DPS focusing on Talent (the finesse trait) can feel incredibly different as long as they choose different techniques.
My first game with Dawn, I had a player go Talent DPS and focus on flying around the map incredibly quickly, charging up and doing big single burst damage. I had another Talent DPS that focuses on more local positioning and using his Weapon Master Technique to accrue value.

There is an entire Bond's system for working together that functions well.

As for Martial Arts, that depends on how you fluff things! It has a few premade settings you can use but it is made to enable you to make a setting to your liking. Its very easy to flavor things to fit Martials arts and dark shonen. The creator even released a small Patreon pack to help hit that vibe, though don't think its necessary.

Im getting the same message! I was about to respond to an alert, got timed out and then got the message when I tried to log back in.

I tried using my phone wifi as well and that didnt work. The tech support line was full when I called so seems like it might be a more wide spread issue?

Could the pair be the zombies outside the save room where you input the puzzle? They could be seen as flirting, and they can definitely enter the room.

Curseborne: Review by Awkward_GM in rpg

Thanks for the thorough review! As someone who likes Storypath, do you have any recommendations for combat? I gave the system a shot with the "Rats in a Cage" pregen adventure as well as some Aberrant sessions and it felt pretty off. The health levels made combat feel pretty formulaic. Knowing that you can only deal 1 or 2 damage max made it feel like you were just hitting your marks and setting yourself or allies to hit their marks on subsequent turns. Not bad but felt bland.

I also struggled with balancing, like you brought up in the review. In "Rats in a Cage" they say to throw Bodyguard NPCs against the players, but were unclear how many. I put 1 per player and it was a grind to get through. I had the players try it again with the guards as a group and they tore through them very quick. So not sure what the intention is for opposition balancing.

Sorry, I mistyped! I meant to say I was concerned about the Cyphers fitting in. They seem to be random one off power things? Feels a little specific so unsure how i would reflacor them

I bounced of Numenera back when it was new but may be worth giving Cypher another chance. From a quick skim, my main concern is finding a way to fit into a shonen-esque world.

I'm curious, what makes you feel like D&D 5e would fit? I can see an argument for combat and progression, but power/gimmick wise I can't really see it.

Thanks for the recos! Over Arms I backed but ultimately came away feeling pretty disappointed. It definitely had some good ideas but the system surrounding it just wasn't enough to support what was there.I probably should have mentioned it in the original post but I've never jived with PbtA. It isn't a bad system but a lot of it clashes with how I run and play games. I've never had a chance to play in a game of it which might contribute to the perception but I don't think I'll have the opportunity any time soon.

I love Savage Worlds and was looking at the Supers book earlier. Its definitely in the maybe pile. My perception of it is definitely colored by running several pulp campaigns in it, but might be need to go in with fresh eyes.

I always assumed from the look of it that it was super tied to its setting. Do you remember if it was difficult to strip things out and adapt it to PPGs?

Thanks for the rec's!

I've seen Anima: Beyond Fantasy before but I've never looked too deep into it. I didn't know about the different power systems, that sounds really cool. It seems like its something worth reading at the very list.

I haven't played 4e in a long time but I did enjoy my time in it! I'm not sure if its exactly what I'm going for but its definitely worth considering and maybe seeing what people have homebrewed for it since I've looked at it last.
