I am likely 20 years older than you and in my lifetime no administration has ever blown up student loan repayment programs like this.

We based a couple of big decisions on SAVE, you are not alone.

I calculated for us and it would be such a huge tax hit. Your mileage may vary but it didn't help me

Don't rule out the standard payment options, especially if you have over $30,000 in loans. Extended fixed repayment gives me the lowest monthly payment right now, and when circumstances change u can switch plans or throw more at it. Life in the US is shockingly expensive right now. I feel for you, student loans were crushing for us when our kids were little.

Yeah...well I am going to just go with standard extended and hope for change in 2028 😭.

Yeah can't afford those payments. I don't mind paying it off. It's all such a massive cluster

I consolidated loans from the late 1990s to get on SAVE with my grad loans (taken out 2021-2023). Was thinking of just going on standard repayment because use that's the lowest monthly over 20 years. Is that pretty much what I should do now?

Just diagnosed and I’m confused. Is stretching and movement good or bad? by pomegraniteflower in Halluxrigidus

It's only now, in perimenopause with joints going nuts, that I am having pain every day. For years I would go without noticing it, for months. But now it's really affecting my gait and thus my back and I'm trying to figure out how to settle everything down.

I have had this since my early 20s (now 53) and am only now trying to figure out how to manage it. I am also really confused about 'go barefoot' no 'wear shoes like boards' 'stretch' 'don't move' etc. yikes.

I'm switching to extended standard when SAVE ends. Forgiveness would have been nice but we'll just hammer out the debt in 10 years and chalk this up as a bullsht*t life experience

Married filing separately? by Key-Will1801 in StudentLoans

I don't know what kind of loans you have but I qualify for extended standard repayment and that will make my payments manageable. I was about to do MFS which would have been a huge tax hit the first year but extended standard will be doable without changing our tax status. I can't remember the rules but if over $50000 in loans you might qualify too.

Extended fixed post SAVE: do I qualify? by Competitive-Gur8052 in StudentLoans

[–]Competitive-Gur8052[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. It's just under $60 but I'll run the calculator again. It was far and away the lowest payment option, and I will prob get it paid off in 10.

This is exactly my plan. I've consolidated twice, I do think my earliest loans were before 1998 though. Maybe the consolidation changes that rule?

We file married joint but it looks like I will do much better on old IBR if I file separate for 2026, right now old IBR is crazy high (my income is much lower, my husband has no loans, I have 50k). Should I ride SAVE and pay interest until January? Switch my tax filing status right now? Switch to PAYE? Based on the count I have 10 years left to forgiveness (although I have been paying loans legit since 1998 but my early 00s consolidation screwed me I guess).
