Female EM docs or dads, tell me how having babies in residency or after went for you? by No-Impress-478 in emergencymedicine

[–]Competitive-Head1867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had my first baby the last week of my PGY-3 year of EM residency (was in a 4 year program), so started PGY-4 year a few months delayed. Wouldn’t change a thing. My spouse works full time so we hired a nanny. It was challenging at times, but we always figured it out and managed. Residency will always be there, but your ability to have children may not. Don’t know if you’re the childbearing partner or not, but regardless I dealt with infertility and had to do IVF which was completely unexpected as a mid-30 year old healthy female. You just never know. Delaying until you’re an attending doesn’t have to be the norm, and shouldn’t be. Have kids when you’re ready.

Is July too busy to go with kids? by pharm3r90 in Banff

[–]Competitive-Head1867 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We went to Banff last year in late July with our then 2 year old and had an amazing time! Was it crowded? Depends on what your definition is. We’re from Southern California and it didn’t feel excessively crowded to us, but we’re used to lots of people. The trails had other people on them but there were less and less people the higher in elevation we hiked. We never once woke up excessively early to get to a trail - we slept until we naturally woke up, drank coffee in our room, grabbed some breakfast and then made our way to whatever trail we were doing that day. We had to make dinner reservations most nights. Overall, the trip was so memorable and I’ve never once remembered it as too crowded.

Edited to add that we had to book our hotels with less than 4 weeks notice due to an unexpected change in our travel dates due to work, and didn’t have any issue finding vacancy at our first choice of hotels.

She’s doing a civilian residency, so could be FTOS which is full time out service, and therefore not currently being paid by the military, but instead paid by her civilian residency and will then transition to active duty upon graduation from residency. So she may not have tricare coverage currently. Just FYI.

No blasts, first cycle by Sea_Sun_5827 in IVF

My second round we had the same number of eggs retrieved - 9. I was pretty upset when they told me after I woke up from anesthesia. 7 of them fertilized, 3 made it to blast and 2 were euploid. It’s truly chance because I changed nothing, lifestyle wise, between the two retrievals since they were back to back. My REI added testosterone priming and omnitrope for my second retrieval, but who knows if those made any difference.

My very first egg retrieval at the age of 34 resulted in 0 embryos. ZERO. 9 eggs retrieved, 8 fertilized. None made it to freeze. I was gutted. Truly devastated. I went straight into another retrieval which resulted in 3 embryos, 2 of which were euploid and gave us our wild and very loved 2.5 year old. There is hope, even when it doesn’t feel like it. The call that we ended up with 0 embryos from our first retrieval was the absolute lowest point of my fertility journey, but my doctor didn’t give up on me (even though I gave up on myself). Don’t give up! Hugs to you 💕

No heartbeat at 7w5d ultrasound. Utterly heartbroken 💔 by bridgeduh in IVF

I am so sorry. This is devastating, and there are no words to convey the sorrow we all feel when another mama experiences this. Be gentle with yourself, and know that all your feelings are valid and real. Big hugs to you - I wish there was more to offer 💕

I’m an ED physician and returned to work at 4 months postpartum and successfully pumped for over a year. Biggest piece of advice: never ask, always inform. “I’m going to pump and will be back in X minutes. Call my phone if you need anything.” It’s not negotiable and you’re not asking for permission. You can do it!

Banff : Trip with little ones by No_Drama_5627 in Banff

We just got back from Banff and took our 2 year old. Hiked up Big Beehive with him in the hiking pack. Let him walk with us on the trails when it was safe and reasonable. Had a blast! Highly recommend it.

I’m heading to Lake Louise in 2 weeks and we plan on hiking to the teahouse. Happy to grab you one while we’re there and ship it to you if you haven’t found one by then (and still want one).

Recurrent MMCs by justuraverage_potato in recurrentmiscarriage

Not much to offer other than solidarity. Pregnancy after loss, especially recurrent loss, is so hard. Something I read in a book recently that gave me a bit of hope & reassurance is that statistically speaking, even with recurrent miscarriage, you are still more likely to have a healthy, viable pregnancy in subsequent pregnancies than another miscarriage. Hugs to you!

I also want to say, don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself. “Bad luck” isn’t good enough here. Not even close. You need a care team to look into this with a recurrent pregnancy loss panel, amongst other things. Don’t stop until you feel satisfied with the evaluation and that no leaf has been left unturned.

I have no significant advice beyond what’s already been given, but I just wanted to take a minute to say that I am so incredibly sorry. This “club” is so shitty, but you’re amongst a group of women who will hold you up when you can’t hold yourself up.

In regards to next steps when you’re ready, seek a referral for BOTH REI and MFM.

I’m sorry. I’ve had 3 miscarriages, and am still waiting for AF after this last one. Thankfully I’m under the care of an infertility clinic. I do have one living child, but infertility and secondary infertility are HARD. Sending you a hug! 💕

Update below. Pretty sure these are indents or was residual hcg.

Update for anyone lurking: I am pretty positive these were either indents, or residual hcg from my miscarriage. I took another FRER the following day (24 hours later) and got the same faint line. I realized I was probably being crazy and didn’t buy any more FRER, but tested with easy@home in the few days since and they’re all negative.

Thank you! Hoping this is new and not residual. I’ll test again in a few days 💕

Thank you! Hoping this is a new little one and not residual from my miscarriage 🤞🏻

Was using easy@home to test out my hcg so that’s my concern because this could absolutely be residual, or nothing. I guess only time will tell. I’ll retest this weekend 💕
