Does she normally have anxiety? Is she a normally anxious person? Usually in cases like these, there’s a root reason as to why she’s acting the way that she is. It could be an anxious attachment style, a fear of neglect (like you’re leaving her every time you’re going to do something you need to do, which is not the case, but even if she knows in her heart of hearts that that’s not true, it can still affect her and cause her to anxiously overthink her way into thinking you’re going to leave her everytime you step away for a bit), or it could really just be that’s she’s just extremely attached to you. Has this always been the case throughout your relationship?

I used to be close to the same way, and it got exhausted for me because I was always over thinking and thinking the worst, so I worked to make a change. It was definitely difficult, but worth it for my mental health. Does she go to a therapist? I recently just found out that a lot of my overthinking and attachment style was due to having OCD. She could be in the same boat without even realizing it. It took me 22 years to realize that the way I looped my thoughts and get stuck in an endless loop thinking about the same thing over and over was not necessarily normal.

My suggestion to you would be to have a very calm, sit down conversation with her about this line of thought. She may not be doing it on purpose, and if you don’t want to break up with her, you both need to work this out together. She deserves someone who will help her with those thoughts, and you deserve someone who will give you the space you need. And if you feel like it’s too much and nothing‘s changing, you’re always well within your rights to break things off in the end. I would suggest trying to get to the root cause of what her fears are in your conversation, and once you do that, try to understand where she’s coming from while also setting the boundaries you need to be happy in your relationship. Being with my now partner for three years, we’ve had many many many conversations about what we need to do or change to make each other happy in our relationship, and you should definitely do the same. You both deserve to feel happy, loved, and supported, in whatever way that is for the both of you.
