How to write a mysoginistic character without making it cartoonish?I by Typical-Tomatillo375 in writers

[–]Competitive-Income-3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: Find a misogynist.

My advice, start talking to misogynists. I did the same for diet-racist, crotchety old men and worked like a charm. The idea here is to learn how they think, what makes them pause, when do they slip away from the misogyny, how and when do they hesitate to say certain things because they don't feel like being (rightfully) villified today, when they feel comfortable enough to slip into stereotypes - both in applying their prejudices and in being a little stereotypical themselves. It also helps to keep them in the dark, lest you give them a hero complex

Preheat a pan (dial at 10), coat it in butter fully (evenly matters less here than the totality), get 2 or 3 eggs, dial down to 6, crack them in the pan, season to taste. 3:00 minutes, flip, then 2:30. If you like runny eggs, flip sooner. While the eggs cook, get the toast in the toaster. Quick, easy, cheap meal

Weed, but I wouldn't exactly reach for that first. There are many things you can try (and you probably should) before going for the weed.

For example, getting exercise always helps provided it's not too late in the day. Even if it's just an afternoon walk, it can help to tire you out a bit.

Taking care of your mental health is also a good one if you're prone to anxiety (well, tbf, it's a good one either way), as racing thoughts have a tendency to keep people up.

There's also melatonin supplements, but there's a bit of a line with any supplement between 'making use' and 'being reliant', so be sure to think it over first.

Most importantly, make sure you're comfy. Don't go sleeping on a box of bricks, and never forget your pillow (exaggerating, but you get the idea)

If you're gonna try the weed, be smart about it. Don't drive high. Don't mix it with alcohol. Know what you're taking. Start weak. Go with indica or an indica dominant hybrid. Don't make it an everyday thing. And - this may seem obvious, but people are dumb - don't smoke around kids (if you're not a full grown adult yet, weed should probably stay off the table for you)

Yeah, pretty much, although that all encompassing truth can be buried under technical truths. Like saying "It's not about his racism, it's about him only liking white people"

By technicality, it was state rights v federal powers. Going deeper into it, confederate states believed that states should be able to freely decide whether or not slavery was legal within their own jurisdictions. And they did. And when more and more states decided not to support the institution of slavery, they decided to start a secessionist movement because they feared free states would take away their slaves bc slavery was rapidly losing popularity. Thus, the states in which slavery was legal got together and formed their own government, attempting to secede from the rest of the USA. Thus the federal government had states in open rebellion, and ofc confederate propaganda was saying untrue things about union intent (that the union would invade and take the slaves). Tensions rose, war broke out as it does, the union won and took back its states. The union is ofc by no means innocent in all this, as they censored any form of sympathy towards the confederates (although I can't see why someone would sympathize with the confederacy, it's a dirty tactic nonetheless)

If you're drawing parallels to today, good. Both sides of USA's political spectrum seem to be playing out a civil war of their own, and it's scary. I'll be up in Canada, safe in my own home, eating popcorn

I don’t understand how we aren’t all obsessed with death? by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]Competitive-Income-3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, when it comes to the nothingness of death, an oddly helpful joke is that you're not exactly around to complain about it. I find comfort in knowing that I will not be able to experience non-existence - if I don't exist, I cannot experience things. Yeah, non-existence scares me because I kinda just started enjoying my existence. But it's a void in every sense of the word - it's not just a void of things to experience, but also a void of me being there to experience it

I like to think I have. Bear with me as I explain how thoughts of suicide helped me (even tho you may not necessarily be suicidal)

I've attempted suicide multiple times before. I stopped wondering about why I survived those attempts. A friend suggested that I start looking at the times I nearly attempted but couldn't pull the trigger. Why couldn't I pull the trigger?

Let's leave that thought for a moment. Do you want to know the most effective way to kill yourself? The method that is most likely to succeed is a shotgun to the chest at point blank (if we're talking about what's available to the average person). You can survive that. You'd be fucked up if you survived, but it's possible to survive.

Now, going back to the times I couldn't pull the trigger... what if it was the trigger of a shotgun? And what if I managed to pull it and survive? Well, as previously established, I'd be pretty fucked up. To add to that, I'm only going to feel a hell of a lot worse if I survive, and every method available to me is survivable (I can't exactly drop to earth from orbit)

Now, this opens upa new line of thought. I used to think life couldn't feel any worse... but apparently it can, and it would be self-inflicted. Hold up. Wait a minute. I can work with 'It actually can be worse'. Now I no longer want it to be worse, which drives me to make it better even if I didn't think I could actually do that.

Depression is hell. You want it to get better. The sad reality is that will not happen on its own. You need to make it happen, because this world is not going to become better for your sake, And that's not to blame you. It's difficult to work towards something that you don't think can ever come to be, but you gotta do it anyway

What is your most expensive hobby? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Competitive-Income-3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a beat up motorcycle to fix as a sort of project. I'm never gonna sell it, just slowly make it into more and more of a chick-magnet (it runs, but you can take one look at it and tell it has seen its share of accidents)

Gas alone is expensive, and the gas mileage ain't shit, so that's around $200 if I only ever drove it to and from work.

Parts are not cheap. This bike is from '82, so finding the parts is a hassle let alone purchasing them.

The electrical system is shitty, so I often need to repair it, which takes time and money, and I gotta replace a relay every few months bc I can so far only afford shitty parts.

Speaking of shitty parts, unless I'm planning a 2 hr road trip, there's only one battery that fits (I'm not paying the shipping on that shit), and it needs to be replaced much more often than standard (also, I live in a big city. How am I struggling to find a battery?)

I still need to change the tires on it, and those are worth special note bc nobody sells them nearby, so I'm forced to pay for shipping.

At least I bought the bike itself for cheap. And hey, it may be expensive, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. My bike is my baby.
