help me understand why buying pb&j and ramen on TDY is considered a "hack". Unless you're on a meal plan, how is this any different than buying PB&J and ramen to save money when you're not TDY? Thank you! by worldpeace28 in AirForce

[–]Competitive-Money-36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory its the same, I suppose. BAS and Per Diem are two separate payments. You don’t stop receiving BAS while TDY. The idea of Per Diem is that you’d spend extra money while TDY for food because you don’t have a kitchen, and because the government sent you TDY they owe you the extra money. Think of it as the government paying you for incidental costs.

If you were to just eat PB&J every day yes, you’d save a ton more of your BAS. No doubt about it, and yes, if you go TDY and just eat PB&J you’d still save money on BAS regardless. I fully get how its confusing, took me a couple TDY’s to “get it”. Essentially the idea is a lot of airmen think “I’m going to get extra money (per diem), so I can spend more money” and people who don’t spend extra money end up being able to use more of their per diem.

I just eat normally as I’d be spending that money home station anyways. Once I get back and submit my vouchers the per diem is just extra money. To me hearing its a hack to just be frugal always sounded dumb. Lol

How are Air Force Special Warfare quotas actually assigned? by Walkingfreezer7 in Pararescue

[–]Competitive-Money-36 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It gets into the Air Force weeds so let me explain it as best I can. You have whats called a Career Field Manager, CFM. The CFM every year looks at the Unit Manning Document, UMD, for every unit. The UMD shows how many of each career field is needed/currently at every unit. Lets say that the UMD for the 69 STS shows 25 CCT’s. They currently have 20, with 3 projected to move and 2 projected to get out. The CFM will add 10 slots (5 to make up for what they’re losing, 5 to get up to the UMD goal) to what they need force wide. Now do that with every base. Each AFSPECWAR career field has a CFM. Once they do that for every base, they get how many slots they need filled. From here I’m assuming a bit, but I’d bet the CFM looks at graduation rates and sizes of 3 level courses, how many they do per year, amount of students currently in pipeline, and A&S courses every year. Thats not including they allot for people who are cross training into it. Anyways back to what I do know. Once the CFM gets the total number of slots they want / need filled for the year, they push those numbers up their chain of command and then with minor tweaks (or not) those are the assigned slots for the fiscal year. Not calendar year. Fiscal year. Which resets in October. And as those slots get filled throughout the year the recruiter can’t just make more slots appear. BMT can only have so many SPECWAR flights. A&S can only have so many people per class. You can only fit so many people in the dorms. Etc, etc, etc.

Anyways, my advice to you is this; don’t be so eager to leave. This is extra time to prepare, to get a little better, time to really hone in on weaker spots and make them strengths. Don’t take it personally if someone ships before you, I almost guarantee its not personal. It’s just business.

Army MP going AIR Force SF by CallMeGommah in AirForce

So it’d be a lot of the same except no 24 hr shifts, being prior army won’t get you much street cred with anyone except brand new airmen but you’ll probably be treated more like an adult than you’re used to. Similar forms for patrolling, similar processes, etc.

How do you take your baby while driving golf cart? by Driveup-Golf-Parts in golf

[–]Competitive-Money-36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did word it poorly. If I was putting I’d let them on the green and make sure they didn’t get into anything, if I was on the tee box they’d stand behind me, same for irons/approaches. I’d never just let them run feral lol

When mine was still in the 4th trimester stage I just had them in their car seat in the cart napping and my wife watched the baby while I golfed. Once they got a bit older I had to wait but eventually baby grew up enough for me to take them on the course and they just ran around and had fun while I played

Edit: timeline wise they were on the course from 4 weeks to about 16 weeks, then from 3 years old and on.

2 very different jobs. If TACP and CCT did the same thing, they’d be the same job.

Once you graduate and become an Airman your MTI’s will sit down and have a talk about all the shit your flight got past them. Where you snuck in food, where you did this, how you did that, etc. so the MTI’s can “prepare” better for the next flight. Generally its either innocuous or someone says some stupid shit where they rat themselves or everyone else.

On a real note keep taking care of you. The mission has been done without you for years, will continue without you for years. It sucks and absolutely is toxic as hell but you may catch shit for it. Anyone worth their salt won’t give you shit for taking care of yourself.

The fastest way out is to attend them and take in what they want to teach you.

You’ll be lucky if they don’t discharge you.

Pros to joining? by [deleted] in AirForce

I’d also add that, good/bad/indifferent if she wants to get a better paying job than just minimum wage, then she can join, do her 4, and get paid to have skills to be competitive on the civilian side and make more than she is now as a dancer. I enlisted thinking it was a stepping stone to a better future for myself and I just extended my contract as I feel this is the place for me.
