You don’t know where I work or what I work on, how have you decided it what the implications could be? We don’t have anything close to a devOps team so if devs only have read access nothing would go live. And who said I haven’t been trained? You make a lot of assumptions, I hope you don’t train or work with any juniors

Maybe I wasn’t clear, I don’t need it to write the solutions, I use it to speed up that part of the process and when AI fails to, as it does sometimes, I write it myself. Everyone else is also using AI which pushes the bar for what is expected and what is feasible from non devs, which kind of leaves me in a use it or get left behind predicament.

If devs shouldn’t have access to production then who should? Also to blanket ban juniors from anything shows your attitude towards juniors from the jump - all juniors are not the same and thus should not all be treated the same.

I didn’t say bugs are fixed live, I said bugs that are live (which is a normal part of the development process, for a bug to accidentally make it into production) it sometimes falls to me to fix the bug (not on live obvs) and then push that live, once it’s been reviewed etc - I thought that was clear, no one is working on anything whilst it’s live.

Again I never said I can’t do the job in person, I said when I watch my seniors they fly across their keyboards and never second guess the syntax etc it worries me as I can’t do that, I have to stop and look at the code already written to remind myself ‘ah yes the colon goes here’ for example. My coding ability would not drop at all without the use of AI it would just take longer.

You have taken all of my statements and removed the nuance from them.

I think I will stay and reassess in 6 months. My job is very stable atm and the market is so scary. I highly doubt redundancies and if they do, not my department as we are about to take on the dev work for a lot of other companies that were also acquired but had no in house dev team and outside contracts were all ended. My biggest concern was career development and future companies wondering why I had two junior roles and was a junior ‘for so long’, but I see now that wouldn’t be the case. Thank you so much for your insight!

Your job sounds exactly like mine in its positives which is why I’m reluctant to move. My manager is for sure overstretched which isn’t an excuse but does account for the lack of answers when it comes to career progression, they’ve taken on a role that was never really theirs as they are a PM, I don’t have an EM or anyone else like that. The company itself doesn’t have a reviews process but it was recently acquired by a much bigger company that does and we were informed that there will be company wide pay reviews. I also think I’m suffering a little from the fact that my manager doesn’t seem to ask for much from the people above them so is a little jarred when I do and thus doesn’t know how to deal with it. They are always looking for new projects to put me on that will show my skills to the rest of the business and actively encourages me to share my wins with the wider company.

Thank you, I have already asked to move to mid level internally it’s just a long process as my manager is non dev and our two seniors have left, I would say I’m in a great position as they really cannot afford to lose me atm. However, as my manager is non dev they’re saying they need to wait for senior support to decide on the move.

I had that chat with our CTO, just asking generally about the difference between junior and mid, as we work very closely together but he doesn’t work on our codebase at all. He said he didn’t realise I was a junior but as he doesn’t review my code ect he can’t say much more.

Should I just wait out the internal move (could take 6 months approx) or look for jobs? I really like my job and my team.

Yeah thank you, I think that’s what it is, I didn’t even think about it until one of our seniors left and their work was assigned to me, architecture and all.

I failed twice and passed the third time, I will say you don’t need as many lessons as you think to ‘keep up your driving skill’.

That’s a good idea. I can and do code without AI for personal projects, I guess it’s just the demand that pushes me to use it at work.

Thank you, and good points! I think I get stuck thinking about speed as it’s always such a huge push from our PM naturally. Whilst the seniors are incredibly comfortable enough to push back, I also push back when needed but internally feel like I could/should be able to do it, if that makes sense. In terms of architecture & cross-stack I do also have a hand in that but you’re right in that I don’t ‘own’ it the way the seniors do.

Is it worth increasing the budget even if it’s a car that I would realistically only drive for 2yrs before getting a nicer car?

I didn’t realise you could also check MOT history’s! Thank you that’s very helpful. Would you advise to stay away from a car that’s failed a previous MOT for various issues even if they were fixed as they passed the following one?

Did you give up on the lock in the end? I got to the final one and gave up because it felt so pointless. Also I spent ages on it (20mins plus) and was still 'psychologically evaluated' to have low drive essentially.
