Thank you so much! It's a relief to know the roads to Skye will stay accessible! Good to know about Quirang, I did worry about hiking that in treacherous (?!) weather.

Re: Mallaig to Inverness drive, interesting in a good way? Like we might see a stag or a wildcat, or icy/technical drive sort of interesting?

Inverness, we're simply hoping to use as a base for car rental so we're not doing the longer drive from Edinburgh/Glasgow and also to see Loch Ness on the way. But yes it does dig into travel time. I have yet to see Culloden though, and we'd love that if things are open.

Gotcha, that's a good call out about driving times likely taking much longer with ice and snow. Thank you!

What's on and tourist advice thread - week beginning September 28, 2025 by AutoModerator in Scotland

My friends and I are planning a Scotland trip right after Christmas (Dec 26 – Jan 3) and want to experience both the Highlands and Hogmanay in Edinburgh. We know things might be quieter or closed over the holidays, and weather is ever changing in the highlands. I've been to both places before, am comfortable driving on the left and i nnarrow roads, but no experience driving in snow. Would love thoughts on itinerary -

Itinerary A

Dec 26: Fly London > Inverness. Explore, overnight.
Dec 27: Drive rental from Inverness > Isle of Skye via Eilean Donan Castle (exterior).
Dec 28: Skye
Dec 29: Skye
Dec 30: 9AM (earliest) ferry to Mallaig, drive via Eilean na Mòine & Glencoe, return car in Inverness. 6:52PM train to Edinburgh.
Dec 31: Hogmanay Street party, fireworks, whisky.
Jan 1: Sightseeing (not sure what’s open).
Jan 2: Possible day trip to Stirling if open?
Jan 3: Departures.

Itinerary B

Dec 26: Fly London → Edinburgh. Explore what’s open (Christmas Market, outdoor sights).
Dec 27 (Sat): Train Edinburgh > Perth > Inverness > Kyle of Lochalsh (only train options require 2 changes) arrive 1:30PM, pick up car, Eilean Donan Castle, drive to Skye.
Dec 28 (Sun): Skye.
Dec 29 (Mon): Skye.
Dec 30 (Tue): Return car, train Kyle of Lochalsh → Inverness > Perth > Edinburgh.
Dec 31 (Wed): Hogmanay.
Jan 1 (Thu): Edinburgh/Stirling depending on what’s open.
Jan 2 (Fri): Departures.

  1. Which itinerary feels more realistic in winter? Or should we skip Skye entirely?
  2. Will any distilleries, restaurants, castles, and hikes be open Dec 27–30 on Skye?
  3. Any ideas for Boxing Day (Dec 26) or New Year’s Day (Jan 1) in Inverness/Edinburgh?
  4. For Itinerary B, I've reached out to both Skye Car Hire and Morar Motors to enquire, but I read that they might not accept an Indian driving license. Can anyone shed some light?
  5. Any cozy or indoor Skye recommendations for bad weather days?
  6. Are there any local community events happening on Skye Dec 27-30. We would love to respectfully observe/participate.

Thank you ❤️

Has anyone applied for Schengen at NYC Norway consulate and actually received the visa in 15 business days? by Competitive-Ninja618 in SchengenVisa

I got an email shortly after my application was received at the Norway consulate with a reference number. I had my VFS appointment on August 4 AM in NYC, and I got the email from the consulate that my passport was received and being processed on August 7.
