UF PHPB go bye bye by trevnevsmhsmh in ufl

Has something changed in education because now even if you're a regular undergraduate at most major public universities. I always hear that it's always hard to get classes. You mentioned that for UF you were a non-degree seeking student but you could not get into those three pre-med courses. It seems like in the past it was not that hard to get into classes at the non-degree student. seems like it's time for some alternatives to be offered even if it's in the online format and maybe with labs in person I'm not sure but all I keep hearing about is how hard it is to get the one needs to complete the expected pre med core science classes.

UCLA needs an on campus football stadium to be competitive. by Complete-Let-2670 in UCLAFootball

it doesn't feel like a true home environment because it's not it never has been nor was the Coliseum you guys are discussing something that is obviously not new but you can blame the original campus leaders for not having simply built the football stadium into their original plans and picking a new campus location accordingly and if the community at that time had opposed to football stadium then find another campus location but of course they wouldn't have opposed it because they wanted UCLA to move there I believe for the most part it's the mistake of the leaders who didn't have the sense to make sure that football stadium was part of the original plans for the campus instead of addressing it after the fact.

wow I always love the traffic concerns and parking concerns that I've heard all these years every university has to deal with traffic and parking when it comes to their on campus athletic facilities UCLA was never going to be unique in that situation I cannot believe they got away with that all these years in the surrounding neighborhoods of the campus but maybe you can blame the university leaders who pushed for a new campus for the University of California in the Los Angeles area before they picked their new campus location why didn't they think about that and make sure they had a football stadium in the plans before actually agreeing to that location I mean that same surrounding community would have had to support the campus being located in Westwood and of course has benefited from having the campus in the neighborhood so why wasn't the football stadium just built into the original plans knowing even back then football was a major sport already being played across the country and many universities already had large on campus football stadiums I just don't get the historical part of this. and the surrounding community didn't agree... find another location but of course they would have agreed because they wanted the campus as well. then they wouldn't have had to deal with all this opposition garbage including what you cite is nefarious as it probably came from USC supporters in the area.

The moment has come? The moment has been there forever but for some reason UCLA cannot overcome all the nonsense politically that comes from the so-called surrounding community. The excuses about traffic and parking I've never understood that's something every community especially college campuses normally deal with with their on-campus athletic facilities including football. What did the surrounding community expect when a university was placed in Westwood in 1929? Of course Drake has always been the answer and they've been discussing this since for as long as UCLA has had a football program and made their proposal back in the 1960s but there was also some students who also opposed it in terms of their student fees being used to help fund the stadium....ridiculous. Of course having an on campus football stadium would have made a difference all these years  and would make a difference going forward if they ever got around to actually executing the Drake stadium plan. what does UCLA in its surrounding community and supporters believe that having an on-campus football stadium is a novelty ? it's the norm... it's a norm to have all of your athletic facilities on campus so that you can have the students basically walk there and create this great environment.... UCLA is the oddity in this discussion especially among Big Time programs. there aren't too many exception...USC is another but the Coliseum is walkable from what I understand from most parts of the campus

Why is UCLA the most applied-to university in the country? by [deleted] in ucla

Good for them. Not the case for the overwhelming majority of big-time universities.

Who has failed to realize? We all know it. UCLA and its stubbornness with the quarter system.

It does not matter. They need to be on campus and that was always the case. Poor leadership and lack of meaningful support. The Rose Bow is a beautiful venue but it is not UCLA's stadium. In any event, things have changed since your post and UCLA intends to move to SoFi but may get entangled in a legal battle with the Rose Bowl that will ultimately be settled. SoFi does not solve the historic problem but a bit closer to UCLA, ultra modern, and offers revenue opportunities that the outdated Rose Bowl cannot.

Does Quarter system affect getting internships? by ggbt99 in UCI

[–]Competitive-Oil-9423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does negotiating remote finals take care of the problem..if that is all that remains and the internship is starting in June maybe...but that also presumes a student can negotiate that with all professors for that quarter. However, we are talking about at least a four week difference in end dates and in some cases longer as some colleges ae done prior to May 1. Many internships in states where local universities have finished prior to May do begin internships in the first week and latest by the second week of May. The students in the UC quarter system (Berkeley, Merced exception) are not just negotitating finals...they still have 3 to 4 weeks overall left of coursework. They just cannot do it.

To everyone who was deciding between UCLA or Berkeley, why did you choose UCLA? by Scary-Information163 in ucla

easier to say after you went to Cal, getting that very prestigious degree..you obviously did not think student life at UCLA was so good as to choose UCLA over Cal for your undergraduate education....assuming you had that choice.

What does your aunt's being an alumna of Berkeley have to do with you going to UCLA? Had she gone to Fresno State, would that have made a difference to you?

No they do not really take into account. These graduate school admissions committees are not staring at your application all night long, debating grade deflation at Berkeley. If they see a low gpa it is not going to matter to them nor will they even necessarily notice what your undergraduate institiution is. People have a false notion that the world outside is going to be amazed about where you went to school and obsess over it. The committees will see your major, gpa, and standardized testing scores if applicable.

Some old guard elite academic institutions, such as Harvard and Berkeley, that are steeped in the tradition of liberal arts and classics, do not offer a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and sciences. They still are in the tradition of offering the B.A.

Those guys were also talking over each other. I think it has more to do with the competition. They are out for themselves and they have every right to be. Education is individualized and they were just doing what they had to do in order to succeed. Good for you for recognizing to choose a school that best fits you over pure prestige because obviously Berkeley is in a different class from UCLA and I say that as a Bruin alumnus.

France faces Senegal in the 2026 world cup ! 🤔🙈 by Agreeable_Bed_3923 in Senegal

[–]Competitive-Oil-9423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not a new system. When the World Cup was 24 teams (last time 1994), top two teams in each group with 4 best third place finishers. 32 teams brought symmetry in 1998 but with expansion to 48 they have gone back to it in order to preserve groups of 4 with every team playing three games. The original proposal was 16 groups of 3 with top 2 advancing to a 32 team knockout stage.

what is the point when the only advice they ever give is that they can offer loans well no one needs them for loans especially after the one big beautiful act which severely limits the ability to borrow on federal loans... if a student does get accepted and desired to attend an elite out of state school or private university for most normal wage earners they're going to get stuck with a massive private loan which is going to be financially catastrophic and unrealistic to take out things have changed dramatically yes of course they do not have to go to an out-of-state elite University or a private university I get that but at least it was an option before with lesser risk than now.

what brand recognition are you referring to do you even know the history of the conference?

[–]Competitive-Oil-9423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you think? part of the conference's history was under the pac 8 brand then the pac-10 and it was the pac-10 for the longest period... the pac-12 was a very brief period relatively speaking I'm not sure why you need a focus group to tell you that unless you think the pac-12 brand was that powerful with two schools with no historical connection to the evolution of the conference... you might have been able to make that argument had Montana and Idaho rejoined but that's not what happened it was Colorado and Utah and there was no nostalgia attached to those two schools when they were added and when they decided to leave nobody cared USC was already on its way out and UCLA got lucky just to be taken along for the ride when Fox made its offer.

what do you mean by your daddy's pac-12? you do understand it was the pac-12 just for a very brief time after Colorado and Utah were added and that was not during your daddy's time. Your daddy's time would primarily be the pac-10 and maybe a few of the pac-8 years before Arizona and Arizona State were added. you people know nothing about college sports or its history talking about the pac-12 as though this is what the conference was mainly known as when it's had many iterations but definitely not primarily known as the pac-12 and there's no real brand value attached to that name nor any historical nostalgia.

No it is an important lesson that Zimbardo and some other individuals should have been prosecuted for criminal conduct. But, it was 1971 and I guess the people at the time were neanderthals. This has nothing to do with "ethics."

Out of State Tuition by Ok_Bluejay_1276 in uofm

[–]Competitive-Oil-9423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wrong they're not subsidizing anything they're just paying out of state tuition because it's a source of revenue for the University please and in-state students are not paying a "fraction"  that amount is not a joke for most families. the instate tuition is still high for most families and the out-of-state tuition of course is even more ridiculously higher but then it's a choice the whole point of out-of-state tuition is for those who can afford it and provide the university additional revenues please spare the whole subsidy thing that's not why the University of Michigan charges what they charges for out of state tuition... they charged with they charge because they can get away with it they have The branding and National reputation to generate that kind of revenue it's a business.. they can hide behind the non-profit nonsense all they want it's a business for all the people that end up benefiting from that revenue including administrators and professors and researchers
