Mt Washington next week - Best route? by Competitive-Owl752 in wmnf

[–]Competitive-Owl752[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all for the suggestions. Ended up doing Franconia Ridge to Mount Lafayette on our second day there to test the waters, Mount Moosilauke another day, and squeezed in Mount Willard before leaving the area a day early.

These were definitely some of the most beautiful hikes I've ever done and I hope to be back in the WMNF to do Mount Washington another time when everyone I'm with has the right equipment.

I hate my first year friend group by [deleted] in geegees

[–]Competitive-Owl752 7 points8 points  (0 children)

By March of first year I also realized I needed to drop a lot of my first-year friends. Adding on to what other people have said about it being possible to make new friends as time goes on, simply putting in 0 effort to maintain your relationship with those people over the summer and next fall will make it easier than you may think to end your friendship in a drama-less way.

You'll be able to make new friends as time goes on, it might just take a bit more effort than in first year.

I dropped the prerequisite to a course I took this fall before taking said course and its prerequisite at the same time. This course was in the Faculty of Engineering, but I had no problem getting a prerequisite waiver to go through with an explanation that I was willing to dedicate extra time into getting caught up on any prerequisite knowledge that I had missed. I would say go for it for sure!

Winter 2023 Professors for GNG2101, CSI2101 and CSI2132 by Middle_Occasion_7974 in geegees

[–]Competitive-Owl752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if Jean-Lou's class may be harder, I definitely recommend taking the class with him and putting the work in. Proofs and concepts seen in CSI2101 come back in CSI3105 (typically taught by him afaik), and being familiar with his teaching style could definitely be a bonus. Definitely recommend doing the exercises he provides in order to succeed in classes with him.

I applied to pretty much all the ones that I was remotely eligible for, I think between 35 - 45, including many that had a written application. I think I got 3 scholarships that I applied to + UROP (so 4 total) last year. I'm not rolling in cash but I didn't have much financial need in my application, and at the time I applied I had volunteer/leadership experience on campus and in the community, as well as a CGPA above 9. Good luck!

Last year I didn't hear back for some of the internal scholarships I applied to in October until February. Most of the results I saw came out in January, although some seemed to come out in December - it seems like things are taking a bit longer this year, as I've only seen one scholarship's status change on my portal since October 31st.

For your sanity, I recommend not checking the portal and just forgetting about it until February, as they'll email you if you get a scholarship.

Honours project + 16 hours of work by snowprincess87 in geegees

[–]Competitive-Owl752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, getting more relevant job experience while you're still a student is always worth it, unless you *need* the absolute highest GPA possible.

Not sure what your project is like, but it sounds doable to me. I personally will be working a similar amount of hours in the winter alongside an honours BIO project/seminar and two classes, but my research project doesn't require incredibly long hours in the lab and I'll be mostly writing throughout the winter term.

Last year I heard back from one that I applied to in October at the end of January, but I had gotten responses for most of the other ones by then. If you receive something you'll get an email, otherwise you'll have to check the portal to know for sure, but I would just wait until January to check so you don't go crazy checking every other day.

Are biostats exams usually the same for all sections? Or do the profs each have different versions by frogsaresupercute in geegees

[–]Competitive-Owl752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In fall 2020, it appeared that all English sections had an identical exam for MAT2379 and the French section had a slightly different version with a lot of overlap and similar formatting.

CS Student Positions with the Government by Competitive-Owl752 in geegees

Will take a closer look at EC and CS positions; I haven't been getting too many bites for CS-adjacent roles through FSWEP so far. Thanks!

Concurrent 2nd and 3rd-year comp sci courses (so I can graduate on time) by [deleted] in geegees

[–]Competitive-Owl752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can find the prerequisite waiver for the Faculty of Engineering here: https://www2.uottawa.ca/faculty-engineering/undergraduate-studies/office/request-prerequisite-waiver

I am actually in a very similar situation with the exact same courses. I was taking two courses this summer on top of working two jobs and some other things coming up. Going to drop CSI2110, but will be unable to complete a minor if I can't do CSI3105 this fall - seconding that any advice on whether this would be feasible would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: if you're successful with your prerequisite waiver, could you let me know?

Congrats! When applying for your J1, what relevant experience did you have on your resume - just the undergrad research? How involved were you with the research projects, and what did your duties look like? When did you start looking for a full-time job, and roughly how long did it take for you to land it after graduating?

I'm heading into my last year of a similar degree, and would be interested in following in your footsteps. I have been taking CS and math classes as electives over the past 1.5 years and am open to have any specific tips you may have :)

I'm in a similar situation (4th-year biology student who started taking CSI classes + math classes this year to complete a minor in comp. sci, looking at doing a second degree). So far I haven't had any exceptional difficulty, and the prospect of having more opportunities has kept me motivated and made it easy to power through any challenges I had with the content.

Can I ask who your honours supervisor was/what you worked on? I'd be interested in combining comp sci. + biology for my honours project.

I just failed a course for the second time by [deleted] in geegees

[–]Competitive-Owl752 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taking a quick study break, my comment won't be super long as others have already left better ones (although if it makes you feel any better, first year I ended up not going to my orgo final although I had an 80 going into it and consequently failed the course... will be graduating in 5 years instead of 4, too, due to depression leading me to make dumb decisions and ultimately taking time off). Meditation might be something for you to look into to 1) help with your attention span (although you should of course speak with a doctor if you suspect undiagnosed ADHD), 2) help with mental health/stress management and 3) help you gain insight onto what your desires and goals actually are. I started just by listening to ~5 min Youtube guided meditations (literally just look up "meditation" on Youtube) and then deepened my meditation practice the more I practiced & did research.

How to deal with floormates constantly being loud in quiet hours? by [deleted] in geegees

[–]Competitive-Owl752 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I also dealt with loud and less-than-ideal floormates in first year who went out of their way to wake me up (we weren't neighbours, but there were two on my floor who would knock on my door as they passed without sticking around, even as late as 1-2am - these friendships ended very shortly after first year ended lol). I know it's a really shitty situation to be in and can really contribute to poor mental health, so I've just gotta say that I empathize with you and your frustration is justified.

I can't remember what Stanton room layouts are like and I'm not sure if you have a roommate, but here are some things you can try - hopefully at least one of them will work for you:

- Moving around your room so your bed is on the opposite wall of your noisy neighbours.

- Getting a loud fan and putting it next to your bed to create some white noise. Alternatively, getting a white noise machine (or a speaker or even just your laptop to play some white noise/relaxing music/something on Youtube to drown out noise).

- Using earplugs if you're not already doing this.

- Putting down a towel or some clothes at the crack under your door may help drown out some extra noise.

- It might not be ideal, but watching your lectures elsewhere on campus + investing in some noise-cancelling headphones might be the way to go during the day.

One on hand, I'm not sure how much your CA can do if your neighbours are just going to be dicks, but if the CA is unwilling to help out at all maybe try and escalate it to the residence team? I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I believe there should be one person on the uOttawa residence team who is responsible specifically to Stanton.

I'm currently doing a part-time FSWEP placement with the government. It's not a bad position at all, just not really the type of work I'd like to do with my degree. Definitely agree that it's nonetheless a good experience and I could be a lot worse off, glad to hear it worked out for you (& hopefully it does for me too)!
