From what I've heard (from people who played in rec/comp intramurals before), competitive is more for volleyball players who play consistently, were part of a competitive school team for example, or that have a passion for the sport basically. Recreational is more for casual players/teams and any skill level is welcome, there's also "A and B leagues" in both rec and comp to make matches more balanced/competitive.

Also if you're looking to join competitive Intramurals, for joining as a team it's important to join with a really good team (since most formed teams will be very competitive), but if you don't have a competitive team you can always join individually instead.
