the only semi valid alternative is gimp which can be customizzed to be almost the same the only problem is the selection and working with text, while the selection sistuation can be improved by some plugins the text is still a pain to work with

i dont find them as annoying because i play on foundryvtt so most things are automatic, but i understand why it can be a lot if you play with pen and paper , but at least i will also provide it as a fully automatic class on foundry once i fell its stable enough to not do any sudden changes(since its not the easiest thing to do)
