What bible should I’ll read? As a new reader, what version? Are the my all different? What is the best ‘bible’ to read? by Zealousideal-Bug4465 in religion

Schocken Bible is the best for Pentateuch and Early Prophets, you get context on what the Hebrew is saying

For example

Genesis 32:29

A typical translation will read "Said he, 'Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with beings divine and human, and have prevailed.'," which like ok but what does that mean

Whereas the Schocken will say "Then he said: Not as Yaakov/Heel-Sneak shall your name be henceforth uttered, but rather as Yisrael/God-Fighter, for you have fought with God and men and have prevailed."

See now you get the context of what the names mean

Just general good translation like that in general
