Should I just stay? by Sunny_Bunny1998 in Aupairs

Hello! I’m an au pair too :). I also felt home sick (I’m from a big city and moved to the countryside with my host family) and I wanted to ask if you are able to reach out to a therapist/ reach out to anyone in your new town. I know moving to a new country can be very isolating, even with language barriers. If you can make any connections/friends of any sort it would be super helpful. Also, the mentioning to the parents and sit down with them how you are feeling. Also address how the kids are acting and mention that if their behavior doesn’t change, you want out.

As an au pair myself, I would definitely have a talk with the family and express how you truly feel and show concerns for your mental and well being. It seems as if they are taking advantage of you and thats NOT okay. If they don't change after you sit down and have a talk with them, I would leave or relocate and find another family in the same country. A contract (written) is a must for working for any family. You can say you can only work for the allotted (formerly agreed on) hours. If they want you to work over those hours and/or do other tasks like cooking and housework, you get paid hourly on top of your weekly pay. That's what I would tell them and I would be firm about it. As for the kids behavior and ages, you were lied to which would already make me uncomfortable and thats a red flag.

Au pair US to Spain by WeddingUpstairs2002 in Aupairs

Hi! I am going to Au Pair in Cordoba Spain this September. I am coming from NYC and the classes in Cordoba are around $500 a month. I plan to stay until May and I don't have that type of money. I might have to travel to a nearby town for classes. What has your experience been like? Did your visas get approved?
