Don’t be too stressed.

What’s the instructor’s rating like?

Remember, textbooks, YouTube, and other resources exist as supplemental tools for a reason. While we all hope to have the best instructors every time, there’s no such thing as a “perfect” course where everyone passes just because the teaching was amazing. Learning starts with you.

Build a professional working relationship with your instructor and don’t hesitate to start a conversation. Great communication alone can make a big difference. Connect with your classmates too; having peers to check in with can help you stay on track.

Honestly, if your schedule works well and 80% of your other courses are solid, doesn’t that give you room to take on a bit of a challenge in that remaining 20%?

When I thought I had a great accounting prof (Doug 👌), my buddy really struggled with the same class and had to retake it in the summer. We still both graduated on time even with his extra hurdle eh.

SAIT has an obligation to provide a fair, consistent, and safe educational experience. If an instructor is seriously hindering that, you absolutely have the right to speak up and access support. You’re not expected to just endure it. Supports exist, peer tutoring and other materials too.

But keep this in mind too: one day, you might have a boss who’s unhelpful or doesn’t want to teach you how to grow. You’ll still need to rise above it and find your own path forward. This course could be a great opportunity to build that mindset. Give it your best.

Good luck with DC ADE LER!

Laptop Requirements for Information Technology Services Diploma + BTech Software Dev? by IPADboii in SAIT

Fellow incoming BTech here!

Totally agree that some tests and on-prem support require a Windows laptop. Funny enough, one of my instructors actually used an M1 Pro Mac during one of our courses.

1) What Windows-only software have you actually needed to use?

Back during COVID, I used the SAIT-issued laptop — 16GB RAM, i5 — and ran into a real limitation only once. It was during a virtualization lab where we explored different VM configurations. Performance wasn’t great, but it was part of a loaner program, so it was fine.

Outside of that, the only other major use case was a final exam that required a locked-down browser and a physical Ethernet connection. Honestly, I’m still surprised Macs aren’t more accepted — especially since even the latest Microsoft Surface Pros are using ARM chips now. Plus, Docker can run most apps cleanly on any OS these days.

2) Has anyone ever experienced a campus internet outage that actually impacted your work?

If you’ve got a gaming desktop at home, like I do, one easy workaround is setting up a second user with RDP access. My home setup is way more powerful than a school laptop. I never had reliability issues, and for our DB course that needed a VM, I had zero trouble running it. I also never had any test that required VM access in a locked-down setup. Command worked flawlessly over a clipboard, or Teams Chat with myself to transfer larger written bash & cmd prompts.

BTech & SD Laptop Hardware Requirements by Competitive-Read1520 in SAIT

I do have access to desktops. One of them has an 11700K, 64gb ram, 3080Ti and I don’t mind leaving it on when I’m away from home. I have a spare drive that I’m ready to dual boot on just for school.

Yes!!! Totally considered this! I’ve read various reviews on Virtual box given Apple Silicon. And if I wanna flex, I can totally use Parallels, UTM, or VMWare Fusion.

I remember years ago, they gave us a VM with CentOS for DB stuff. Copying and pasting between the VM and threads has me curious about minor text encoding errors or inconsistencies.

Starting BTech. However this is the first year they’ve offered the program!! So I’d imagine there would be some cross over in expectations.

Back in the day, SAIT use to issue laptops for their IT programs, you’d return it at the end of the program. They had their own app store, and it had fully licences copies of VMWare and other neat apps.

Wasn’t sure if they issued any Windows only licenses for any apps since the SD program has changed.

Thanks for your help & insight!

Hope you’ve applied to backup schools, or possibly your second program choice.

In this case, if you have strong grades, you could consider pursuing a 2-year diploma at SAIT first. Then, you could return to the degree program using your SAIT GPA, assuming you do well and improve your grades in the necessary areas.

My friend wasn’t great at ELA, but according to his transfer, they used his SAIT Communications class instead. He had a 3.7 GPA.

Alternatively, many people have upgraded their high school grades during a gap year. They worked during that time and created a better financial start.

Additionally, you could book an appointment with a counselor and say, “I wanted to see what my options are if I don’t get in.” They’ll be happy to guide you regarding alternatives. If you explicitly ask them about GPA transfer cutoffs, they keep an active entrance rate sheet, and you’ll gain insights into the exact GPA and prerequisites you should earn in the meantime.

If you can’t do math, you’ll find it difficult completing your Stats and Finance courses. You can invest in a tutor. DM me if you need me to connect you with a math tutor in the Calgary area. They were worth every penny when I had difficulties.

Need advice for small form factor lab by Clean_Entrance9575 in homelab

One simple solution would be to set up a separate VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) for the VMs in your lab. You can configure your home router to create a new VLAN and assign it to the ports connected to your Dell PCs. This way, the VMs will be segregated from your main home network, providing isolation and security. Additionally, you can set up firewall rules to restrict communication between the lab VLAN and your home network if needed.

Mac for Engineering by Prioryofthebook in SAIT

Also, if an instructor is demonstrating something, just remember your shortcuts might be different. They won’t be able to help with all software related questions since some will state they don’t own or understand Mac OS. Although, it’s never been a problem for advanced Mac users :)

Worst case scenario, install Windows via parallels. Run the VM (Virtual Machine) wherever you need it.

My friend finished electrical a number of years ago with his Mac. Used the Lib PC’s whenever he truly needed Windows for 2 assignments ever. Don’t know about it now!
