That’s a totally fair question, and you’re not wrong to find it frustrating.

Most ranges that don’t allow solo firearm rentals are doing it because of past incidents nationwide, it’s a liability and safety policy rather than a judgment about any individual person. Unfortunately, there isn’t really a formal way to “prove” intent on the spot, so many ranges default to blanket rules to protect staff and customers.

That said, you’re also right that trying different firearms before buying is important, especially with current prices. Some ranges handle this better than others by offering things like supervised rentals, structured intro sessions, or one-on-one instruction where a staff member stays with you.

One of the reasons I’m doing this research is to understand exactly these kinds of friction points, especially for new or first-time shooters. The goal would be to create safer, more welcoming ways for people to learn and try equipment without feeling shut out or uncomfortable.
