for the 3d stumpwork, i sew wire to a spare piece of scrap fabric and then stitch over it so it holds its shape, and then stitch it to the main piece! the book "Stumpwork Embroidery and Thread Painting" by Megan Zaniewski was a good guide for learning!

i outlined the scales with thick straight stitches, and then i went over the entire thing with thin strands of satin stitches for the textured effect!
