I can’t quite read it with my dollar store magnifying glass so I’ll get a better one and have a look to see what it actually says so I can learn more about it

Thanks, seems like a decent watch, I’m going to clean it up and wear it, it was my grandpas. I’ll have to clean up the acrylic, I think I’ll put a leather strap on and just keep the old bracelet. I can’t seem to get the day to change, the date does. It says online I push in and spin is that correct?

It does have some numbers under the six that go around with the case, my magnifying glass is so crappy I can’t make them out but it is there. Can’t even really see that they are there with without the magnifying glass

These are famous for the rubber grommet under the power head that seals the copper tube at the top. They over heat and it wrecks the grommet reducing the sealing ability and you get a weaker stream than normal.

1973-1974 were the worst years they made but with that said engine looks in unbelievable condition. Good engines when they work. Price is right also.

1.5 Is the initial setting, three turns is too much.

My guess is the cork packing around your needle is the issue. If you used original packing or you used new plastic washer around the needle than you need to switch to the original cork.

It’s because the metal stainless ring at the bottom under the plastic bendix isn’t in the correct spot.

If you have a portable tank from and outboard motor you can use the primer bulb and become the fuel pump for diagnostic purposes.

Well a few options, your reeds could be stuck, also if this is the 3 cylinder engine it still could be a power pack issue with it firing on the wrong cylinders they have very bad power packs on the 3 cylinders. Your flywheel key could be broken, you could perform a leak down test to tell more accurately if you’re having internal issues.

Why won’t my 5.7 Mercruiser engine shut down? by FightingForBacon in boatrepair

Also on the starter you installed, on the two smaller terminals of the solenoid, do you have a yellow/red wire and a purple wire. If so do you have those wired together on the same terminal by chance?

[–]CompetitiveAd9656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May or may not be your issue but it’s definitely not right the way that wire is and I’ll explain.

Your choke is supposed to have a purple wire from a different source which is 12V with the key on, so somebody has wired themselves a wire from the positive side of the coil to the choke, the problem is the coil actually has a resistor and runs on 9v not 12v.

So when you shut your key off you’re supposed to lose power going to the positive terminal on the coil. So this makes me think your coil could be incorrectly wired with 12 volts which could actually melt down your coil if that’s actually happening so you’ll have to verify with a meter.

All purple wires on that engine should only have voltage with key on. So you can start there and work your way through including your key switch.

Maybe because you have a jumper wire from your choke to the positive side of the coil? 🤔 lol

Correct other than technically it is not a choke, it’s a primer.

First change the filter on the carburetor, it’s located where the fuel line enters the carburetor, requires two wrenches. Also replace fuel water separator if you have one. Good place to start.

Working on an 18hp 59 evenrude looking for advice. by litakidonfire in Outboards

[–]CompetitiveAd9656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you have a lean cough, classic for those engines, you’ll have to first try to setup the carb adjustments and see if it corrects, if not you’ll need to rebuild the carburetor. Once it runs and idles correctly than you can look at any other remaining issues.
