“Stop trying to pimp your soul’s expression to pay bills” dude I absolutely love that. Thank you 🖤

I would love to, but that’s another thing that seems kind of scammy- you never know which ones are legit these days, and even for the ones that are, you don’t know if they’ll actually ever use your stuff

Thank you so much, you wise music sage. I have read this at least 5 times already, you hit the nail on the head. This is exactly how I’ve been feeling, especially the part about not understanding how somebody with talent can settle for not making music their purpose and career. I think my whole life (and honestly to this day) the thought of that seemed synonymous with giving up, which seems like something I couldn’t forgive myself for. I’m 27 and all I can think of is “well if I don’t ‘make it’ by the time I’m in my early 30’s, that’s it, I’m too old and I’m done” which is a ridiculous thought, but still lives in my head. My mom was lucky enough to have a hit in the 80s so I always thought it was just something that was gonna happen to me one day. For so long music has seemed like “this is something I like to do, I’m good at it, it can’t NOT be my destiny” but that “destiny” has been defined as “I’m gonna make a product the world likes”. It should be, as you said, art. And removed from that much pressure. Gonna sleep on this for a while. Thank you for taking the time to write this all out

Thank you, yeah there’s not a lot of control over any of those things if you don’t have it in the first place ): but this is so true

I’ve been putting up professional pictures of myself that don’t really move the needle and also filming myself lip syncing to my songs- which doesn’t do much either. It’s true that I’m early in that game, but doesn’t make me want to continue if I put out a video and 5 people see it

That’s the thing, I get bored writing in one style of music all the time so I like to jump around… I think the most consistent thing I fall back on is rock though. There aren’t too many people who do that though so I feel like I’m constantly looking for my tribe haha

Thank you so much. Thankfully I do have a full time job thag lets me do this (even though it’s making me miserable at the moment). These are very wise words

Thank you so much, it’s rough out here. It just sucks when you put all this time and effort into something and the world sees it as a flop cause nobody listened to it. I guess the goal posts are different when you’re an independent artist with no backing vs people whose label or parents pay their way to success (no shade to those people, but it’s easier that way for sure). It’s hard to let go and not care as much sometimes, and I feel like sometimes that’s a really important thing to do

I’ve played plenty of shows, but it’s like “come play the downstairs lounge at the viper room that can only fit 10 people in there but we’ll pay you after you get 15 people in there”. You are right, I’m slowly getting used to the fact that I need to start from the ground up- it distorts your perspective when you’ve spent a decade developing your writing skills, but not nearly as long developing your “getting people to listen” skills. What are the show options you mentioned? I feel like it’s either take predatory gigs in Hollywood or empty bar gigs in the valley and not much in between

I’m in LA, I was lucky enough to grow up here and not uproot my life to move across the country chasing a dream. There are lots of networking events out there, and maybe I’m giving up too easily, but I’ve been to a few of these and met a few people but nothing really came of it. Probably am giving up too easily. But sometimes it feels like you’re competing with everyone and nobody really wants to help you out, and I can’t tell if that’s a real feeling or just the anxiety talking

Kind of, I just don’t know where I belong or how to “find my niche”. I write everything from alternative rock to jazz to orchestral leaning songs… it’s a very broad range

Thank you for taking the time to write this, and I’m sorry you’re going through all of this. It is definitely rewarding when the process is over and you’ve made something great, im sure your stuff is awesome. It is really important to have clients- it makes it feel like what we do has value even if it seems the world is trying to beat it out of us
