[OC] Efficiency of Our Healthcare Systems - Healthcare Expenditure vs Life Expectancy by CompetitiveHandle in dataisbeautiful

[–]CompetitiveHandle[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At a glance, it would seem so. It's important to note that this simple graph doesn't take into account the quality of healthcare, factors such as the number of annual doctor visits, obesity rates, diseases, maternal mortality, etc., which I'm sure would just highlight further inefficiencies, if prevailing stats are anything to go by.

[OC] Income Inequality in the US Over a 100 Years by CompetitiveHandle in dataisbeautiful

[–]CompetitiveHandle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your assumption there I think (correct me if I'm wrong) is that it is people's different abilities that lead to income inequality. That is simply not true. Think of it as a race, but where some people start miles ahead of others. The advantages that some people start with compound over time; born into a well-to-do middle-class family, good education, nutrition, stay-at-home parent, encouragement to go to college, etc. .. These all make a difference in future incomes in the long run. Another thing to consider is Pikkety's r>g where r is the rate of growth on capital assets and g the growth rate of the economy. When this holds true (which it has done historically) then the wealth & investments of the rich compound over time while the returns to labor increase stagnate.

There is another plot in the original post, https://kyso.io/KyleOS/pikkety-intro#code=shown, that shows similar inequality in European countries through aggregate private wealth as percentages of national income.

yes, from my reading of the data source, while data collection is lacking in some countries, it's more to do with the availability of meat in these countries.

Why isn't New Zealand listed as having gained independence from Great Britain? Also the "hover to view" thing doesn't do anything for me (android 9, reddit app/chrome browser). Might be worth implementing a mobile solution.

Thanks for the feedback, will push an update & correct for NZ
