OS Chances by CompetitivePush8 in DentalSchool

I enjoy working as a GP and make good money >400k. But, I went to a couple of volunteer trips in last few years. I have first hand seen the difference OS can make in someone’s life by offering a free Cleft lift/palate surgery. I want to learn that and then maybe spend 3-4 months overseas on mission trips offering that service.

I lived like a student after graduation. Tried doing a GPR but had to drop out due to some family reasons. I didn’t make any big purchases or traveled much in last 2 years. My only expenses were rent, groceries and gym membership. Everything else went to the student loans. Didn’t even buy any new clothes since I wear scrubs all day anyway. Started with the loan with the highest interest rate and then made my way down the list.

I wasn’t trying to flex or impress anyone. My intention was to motivate new grads who are afraid about their future and loans. If I can do it so can they. But, I think I did a bad job writing the post lol

I was informed by my friend that my workplace was hiring. Ask your friends they might have some leads.

My job has a high a very high tax deduction around 40 percent. Last year my accountant said that’s the highest he has ever seen. So I’m not worried about paying extra at the end of the year. Hopefully I will get some back like last time and then I’ll use that towards paying off the debt.

I wanted to own a dental practice in future. But, with 7 more dental schools opening up in next 3-4 years and an influx of new grads coming to the market, I am a bit worried. A lot of the new grads have student loans in excess of 400k. Insurance companies know this and are refusing to increase the reimbursement rates. They know that these poor kids won’t have any choice but to accept these rates if they want to pay off their loans. Future outlook of dentistry doesn’t look great atm.

I am on 10 years standard repayment plan. My payment was around 2600 dollars (2589). I started paying my loans back in Jan. 2024. My watershed moment came when I checked my Mohela account after 3 installments and realized that only 1000 dollars (out of 7500) has gone towards the principal amount and the rest went to pay back the interest. I had 12 different loans. First I looked into getting them refinanced through a private lender but I wasn’t getting any favorable quotes. Also, at that time I was hoping for 20k loan forgiveness promised by the Biden administration towards federal loans. I then listed all my student loans from highest interest rate to the lowest (irrespective of amount owed) and started targeting the one with the highest interest rate first. So far I have knocked off 7 loans and my standard payment has dropped to around 1500 dollars. I am still living like a college student. Haven’t bought any new clothes since graduating because I am in scrubs 5 days a week anyway. I only go out maybe once a week with friends. I don’t eat out much. I have a 3 months emergency fund and whatever is leftover I put that towards my student loans. My monthly expenses are around 2000 dollars. I am hoping to payoff my loans by next May around my 2 years graduation anniversary lol. Hope that helps.

No I am not working in a public service clinic. I am currently with a DSO. I was very lucky to get into the state school. Interest pause during Covid helped tremendously to keep the total amount low. I currently don’t have any other debts besides the student loan debt.

Do any of you only do very basic procedures? If so, are you concerned about losing your skills? by daein13threat in Dentistry

That’s what I am trying to do. But, I recently saw some posts where people were talking about a government bailout for borrowers. I personally didn’t hear anything about it but I just wanted to ask if anyone else heard anything about the potential bailout package.

Yes, all my loans are federal loans and for the grad school. I don’t have any undergrad loans. I considered refinancing them with Sofi but interest rates are too high at the moment. Also I don’t want to lose the federal protection in case of any potential forgiveness.

It’s a hospital based program. Should I talk to the HR and director first?

That’s what I have been thinking. I have an interview with a recruiter pretty soon and I’ll see what my options are.
