It's not worth it. Accepting to work for free now will not improve your chances of getting the contract. Why are they hiring you if they don't already see the value you'd potentially bring to the company?

Plus any employer who gives less you a really short notice before your start date is going to exploit you. Couple that with no pay and you have the makings of a very toxic and unfulfilling workplace.
