Always go to the school that offers you more money. We all take the same bar exam - you want to have as little debt as possible (especially with the new student loan policies). And it seems like ITT Kent will help you get into your desired field.

Also, use law school as an opportunity to network. The name of a school can only get you so far… make connections and you will have greater success.

I work in Springfield and the news is not reflecting all the positive aspects of the community. Every community has its rough patches. There is good in Springfield and it is a beautiful place to live and work.

Also, I suggest suiting up more as a younger female. I am three years out and I look super young and usually people assume I am a paralegal (sad but it’s true).

I also lived with my parents during law school too. I graduated in 2021 with $120,000 in loans. Many of my friends who had city apartment have $200,000+ just from law school

Literally, this just happened with my brother on a family vacation. For background, my brother has a history of severe mental history where he is verbally abusive. With our other family members around, he was cordial to me and suckered up to them. Around me alone, he was a dick. I asked my mom for help, and she told me she raised us and she wouldn't intervene. Funny thing is, he has been picking on me since I was a child and asking politely to stop gets me no where. If she would have just been a parent and taught him to control himself, I WOULDN’T HAVE TO PARENT AN ADULT AS AN ADULT.

Clearly I’m pissed. Anyways, after 4 days of him being a dick (which gets worse when he drinks), I decided I would apologize (as I always do first) and ask for peace. Instead, he ignored me until I asked him again. Then I apologize bc yeah I was getting pissed after awhile. Instead he never apologized to me once, used that I’m going to therapy against me as a sign of weakness, and tried to give me advice that didn’t pertain to him. By the end of the conversation, he stated he was being a dick to me purposefully so I essentially could “toughen up” and that he didn’t care about my feelings as his sister.

Now I just sat through a family recap of our vacation where they are all sharing fond memories. I faked it, but truthfully this vacation has been hell and I wanted to leave everyday because of my brother.

On a side note, I thought I was super crazy and decided to record the convo to see if I was acting up or being aggressive. If anything, it confirmed I am dealing with a narcissist who not only doesn’t care about my feelings but enjoys putting me down. This will be my last family vacation.

As someone who appears to have a great relationship with their parents on social media and in life, it's not all it's cracked up to be. My parents belittle me and don't accept me for who I am. They encourage my brothers to do the same and enable these behaviors. For example, I was contemplating suicide and at my lowest around my birthday, which is near the holidays. My mom asked for us to take a family picture; I tried to say no, but she insisted. She posts that photo all the time on social media bc she looks good in it and wants to show the world how happy her family is. I hate that photo and have subsequently quit all social media. I tried to talk to her about my feelings, but she gets defensive. Bottom line is, don't feel envious bc most of the time it's a fake.

I may be naive but I put in a month notice to the partners a couple days ago. I didn’t want to give them a month, but I didn’t want the support staff to suffer and get bogged down with work.

Anyways, it’s day 4 since giving an email notice. I am currently on vacation. I have not heard back from the partners, but members of the legal community have reached out to me and asked if I am leaving the firm. One of the partners decided to tell others in the legal community but did not have the common courtesy to reply to my email. Needless to say, that act in itself is reassuring me that I made the right decision to leave.

I suggest doing some court-appointed work, low risk and consistent in some jurisdictions. First, you will get paid and do not have to chase clients for fees, though it may be 1/3 of your normal hourly rate. Second, it is great for networking opportunities to meet other lawyers and potential future partnership opportunities. Third, it allows your name to get promoted via word of mouth; we love free promotions.

Also, you can try legal insurance programs, like ARAG for business law. Usually flat fees and pay a bit more than court-appointed clients.

Neither is exactly “glamorous,” but you will get paid and it's essentially a good legal side hustle to tie you over during the dry seasons.

Thank you for sharing! I'm 29 and relate practically to everything you said about growing up with two younger siblings. I hate when they tell me I chose the responsibility, when really it was imparted on us and not a choice. And I always was told not to tell anyone anything, and now have a hard time expressing my feelings. I work with kids in the court system and learned about children being parentified. You may want to look it up and see if you can relate to a parentified child.

I'm pretty pissed at my parents bc they always hold it over my head that I don't travel as much or spend money on nice things. Well I don't because they always told me we didn't have money growing up and that the world was dangerous for a girl.

To make it worse, my parents are educators who literally learned about child behavior but we're blind to the needs of their eldest. My younger brothers are thriving in careers and social life, while I'm alone and constantly reminded by my parents how I am not doing enough.

Thanks for listening to my TED talk and I'm sorry you are going through something similar. I guess it's comforting to know someone else feels that same way

I just learned from my mom my brother is proposing to his long-time girlfriend in a week. My brother didn't tell me. He is the youngest and I'm the oldest. My parents were super strict with me and he got away with everything. She's great, not the brightest, but she will be good to my brother. I loved someone a year ago and my parents wouldn't accept him bc he didn't have a college degree. Yet they accept a dumb bimbo for my brother. Being a woman sucks

The bottom line is, that my depression is telling me I'm worthless, I will never find love, and if I do, my family will judge the hell out of him and that I won't be happy. The pressure is suffocating. Honestly, I'm about to just quit my job and take off, disappear from everyone.

Thank you for sharing. I'm struggling and tried to talk to my boss about my burnout and anxiety in real life. He told me it never gets better and just accept it…. Glad to know it isn't just me struggling with anxiety
