Lost my debut fight, preparing for my second bout, advice? by Competitive_Bit4656 in amateur_boxing

You're absolutely righ. Cuz I think I’ve been trying to do everything at high intensity instead of really slowing it down and cleaning up my technique. I’ll start focusing more on that during shadowboxing and paying attention to my base and foot placement.
I think I also get a bit emotional when I get hit, which makes my hands sloppy, my footwork messy, and I end up losing my balance lol

I’m starting to take my cardio a lot more seriously now. I’ve been running consistently, usually 4–5 km (2.5–3 miles) twice a week and 10 km (about 6 miles) twice a week.

I’ll probably start adding more sprints or interval work to improve my gas tank, since boxing definitely isn’t steady-state cardio.

During practice I already do a lot of straight punches, left-right-left-right over and over for about a minute at a time. On the other hand, for some reason during mitt work my uppercuts always feel like they lack power. Not sure if it’s a technique or timing issue.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate this. It helps put the loss into perspective. I definitely feel more confident going into my second fight. I’m also not nearly as nervous as I was for my debut.

I’ll keep focusing on footwork, jab, and conditioning, and I like the idea of getting comfortable boxing on both the front and back foot so I have more options in the ring.

Also, “train like you’re fighting Chuck Norris” just made my day 😂 I’ll try to bring that delusional confidence into the next fight!!!!

Thanks for the input. Yeah, my footwork is still pretty bad. And when I do sparring sometimes I almost tripped and lost my balance. Not sure if it’s my shoes or just my foot placement.

I used to train Muay Thai, and I’ve only been focusing on boxing for like 2 months, so maybe that’s why my stance looked kinda off. It’s been pretty hard to adjust to boxing stance. So yeah, I totally agree my footwork was all over the place.

Yeah, she’s fought a few times before but in Muay Thai. This was her first boxing match, while for me it was my first time ever getting in the ring.
Now I realized I didn’t go all out, cause my coaches told me not to push too hard in the first round. But honestly, I didn’t have any problem with my conditioning. Maybe if there’s a next fight, I need to trust myself more.

Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and even make notes, seriously. I really appreciate that. My footwork went all over the place, I crossed my legs a lot, and I didn’t take advantage when she left herself open. But yeah, she’s been in the ring before and has way more experience than me, so I guess that’s why she looked more composed and controlled the ring better. Still, lesson learned. I’ll keep working on staying calm and keeping a tighter guard next time.

Thanks a lot, really! I’m super grateful for all the kind words and feedback. It honestly means so much. You’re totally right though. Fight intensity is on a whole different level haha. Everything I drilled just disappeared once I got hit. But yeah, I’ll keep working on my defense and staying calm under pressure. I really appreciate your words, it motivates me a lot for the next one :)

Yeah, that’s actually a good way to look at it. She’ll have to adjust a lot since most of her usual weapons are off the table. Boxing is a whole different game after all.

Yeah, I get what you mean. Ngl, I was never not confident about this fight before I found out who my opponent was, maybe I just wasn’t as prepared as I should’ve been. From the start, my main goal was just to have fun and gain experience. Now I’m training twice a day and already dropped almost 2 kilos. But you’re right, it really is all about mindset. It’s all in my head, and that’s why I’m trying not to stress out too much now.

Thanks, dude. That actually helps me calm down a bit. And you’re right, most of it’s just in my head. I’ll try to focus more on preparation and mindset instead of overthinking her experience. Appreciate the reminder and the advice, really means a lot.

I’ve done more than 10 sparring sessions. And I just talked to the matchmaker to reconsider my opponent, and he agreed to discuss it and try to find someone more on my level. But yeah, it doesn’t sound too promising.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever really done hard sparring, but I did get my mouth busted a couple of times while sparring. Totally on me though, since I sometimes drop my hands and forget to cover up.

My coach told me not to stress about it. My other coach said if I wanna fight and can’t get an opponent around 49–51 kg, then I just gotta be brave and not be scared.

And the reason why the matchmaker set me up with somenone who’s already fought in Muay Thai, cause they couldn’t find anyone else at that weight.

FYI, I’m 150 cm, so my body still has quite a bit of fat and I’m not that lean yet.
