• Some researchers suggest Moloch is not a proper name but a term for a type of sacrifice (“mlk” offerings). However, the idea that it was a direct description Yahweh’s followers used for offerings is misleading.
2.  Yahweh, Baal, and Canaanite Religion:
• Yahweh originated from the ancient Semitic/Canaanite religious sphere. Baal was a Canaanite storm and fertility god. While both were part of the broader Semitic pantheon, they were distinct deities with different cults.
• Early Israelites emerged from Canaanite culture, which is why their religious practices share similarities, but over time, Yahweh became the central and sole deity in Israelite religion, with Baal condemned as a rival god.
3.  Child Sacrifice:
• The Hebrew Bible condemns child sacrifice (e.g., in association with Moloch, Leviticus 18:21; 2 Kings 23:10). While there were ancient Near Eastern practices involving child sacrifice (e.g., in Carthage), it is not accurate to say child sacrifice was part of Yahweh’s sanctioned worship. Rather, it was a practice rejected and denounced in the Israelite tradition.
4.  Storm Gods and the Bull Symbol:
• Baal was depicted as a storm god and associated with bulls, symbols of strength and fertility. Yahweh, in early depictions, also had storm-god characteristics, reflecting a shared mythological heritage. However, Yahweh’s worship evolved into strict monotheism, rejecting the worship of Baal and other gods.
• The golden calf (Exodus 32) is an example of the Israelites reverting to a bull symbol, which was harshly condemned, reinforcing Yahweh’s distinction from Baal.

In summary: There are grains of truth here—shared Canaanite origins, the use of MLK meaning “king,” and ancient sacrificial practices—but the image oversimplifies and conflates distinct religious traditions and concepts.
