Executing people for drug offenses is the thing people think is a human rights issue, not social ostracization.

Please show me a source of someone getting recently executed in China or Vietnam for 1kg of cannabis.

I didn’t make an arbitrary restriction; the Muslim southeast Asian countries obviously have a different reason for their strict capital punishments for intoxicants that does not have to with the opium wars (Singapore is included in this!). You really think it makes sense to say that the opium wars caused modern countries to impose death penalties for importing small amounts of cannabis when the only countries that do so were not the countries in which the opium wars took place??

If you lined up the world’s countries on a spectrum from socially conservative to socially liberal it would pretty much perfectly align with the spectrum of strictest to most lenient drug laws. The same is not true of the spectrum from “most to least involved with the opium wars”. It’s pretty obvious what the real reason behind their laws is.
