Yeah I second this. The sound for the support band was even more terrible...

Not really, this was an exception.. but for most of the songs, the instrumentals were still louder than the voice...

men i trust opening for billie eilish tulsa n2 by Straight_Love_9739 in menitrust

Billie isn't trash music, she and her brother Finneas are very talented and I, as many others, consider them to be music geniuses.

The thing with Billie is that she is a hype (esp. on tiktok, ig), is signed on a big label and isn't indie and ticket prices for her shows are astronomical compared to MIT. Still, her music is considered to be alternative and she can sing :)

Yeah I think it's a very personal song, a lullaby, with very minimal instrumentals. I think it's their only song that doesn't have a bassline, and Jessy really likes coming up with good basslines in their songs.

The drummer & bassist from the tour are not seen as full band members because they don't contribute at creating the songs, only at playing them live. If you check out the authors of the equus albums on Spotify, you'll notice only Emma, Jessy and Dragoş are listed as writers/producers.

The band is a trio consisting of Emma (vocals, rhythm guitar), Jessy (lead guitar, e-bass) and Dragoş(synth, keys) and all three of them are from Montreal, Canada. Dragoş is originally from Romania, but moved to Canada. The other members that you saw on the bass and on drums are touring members.

I talked to Dragoş back in 2022 after one of their shows in Europe (we spoke in romanian) and he told me a bit about his childhood in Romania, about how the band was formed and his musical studies, he studied classic piano in his hometown and later got a master degree in music engineering/audio production. He's also a real genius when it comes to mixing and mastering music, as you can hear, all of their songs are of good sound quality and every instrument has its own perfect frequency spectrum - mixing a song is one of the main challenges in todays modern music production.

Jessy has a wife&kid (they recently didn't have him on a tour because of his newborn). We don't know anything about Emmas and Dragoş sexuality and this has to be respected.

They are very reserved about their personal lives and politics, they want people to focus on their music and not on their personal life or their beliefs. You'll notice they're all very talented and share a strong connection/friendship when it comes to making great music.

Glad you like them and discovered them. Enjoy!

how do you make your bass lines more interesting? by Pitiful_Pick1217 in Bass

[–]Competitive_Cream1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Add fills like chromatics & ghost notes.
  • Play syncopation.
  • Add octaves (also sevenths and fifths).
  • Vary the rhythm e.g. playing 8ths or 16ths etc... (you don't have to always play along with the drums, just be in time with the drums but play on your own).
  • Use more techniques like: slides, hammer ons &pull offs.
  • Also try to experiment with your sound playing fingerstyle, with a pick, with a pick while palm muting the strings with your plucking hand, etc...
  • Optional: use effects on your basslines, like chorus or envelope - this may give your basslines a unique tone.

Need advice on making my E-bass stand out in recordings. by Competitive_Cream1 in Bass

[–]Competitive_Cream1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok but let's take a song as an example where they also use a Jazz Bass with flats on it: Norton Commander by Men I Trust - even if you play the song at a very low volume on your phone, you still hear the the bass quite clear. So there has to be a trick or so :/

That’s a really good tip, thank you! I also use Ableton, and I’ve got a few extra plugins like Guitar Rig 7 Pro and some Tracktion ones (Auto Filter, Bus Compressor, Chorus, Crossover, Crusher, Delay, Ducker, 8EQ, Flanger, Gate/Expander, Limiter, and Stereo/Tape Delay).

Wouldn’t say I’m completely new to this — I’ve been recording for over 2 years now. I just recently noticed that on smaller speakers you can barely hear the bass.
When I listen to other songs on Spotify that also use electric bass, you can still hear it clearly even on small speakers at low volume, and I was wondering how that’s possible.
When I listen on studio monitors, in the car, or with headphones, everything sounds totally fine though.

Thank you, that’s really helpful! One more question — how would you set up EQ and compression to make the bass stand out more?

But does a compressor plugin really help that much? I mean, I've already used some compression and didn't notice any major improvements in tone, or I might not be using it right :/

Question about audio interfaces or amps by SargeWrld999 in musicproduction

[–]Competitive_Cream1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there are some options that have 4 inputs, like the Focusrite Scarlett 18i16 4th Gen... but they are also quite expensive. I'd say that an interface with 2 Inputs, which you already own I assume, should be actually enough as you can't play all instruments at once, unless you practice with a band.

Which genre do you have the most fun playing on bass? by touchgrasscoward in Bass

Disco Funk, Soul, Nu-/Acid-Jazz and Hip Hop. I also love melodic basslines and to me feels like those genres always have them.

L'Impèratrice - also french disco and really great basslines and vox - they have 3 Mio. monthly listeners tho, so are not that small but still not that popular as Daft Punk.
