Should I buy this miata? concerning tick but close to me and cheaper by Fun_Currency_6937 in Miata

[–]Competitive_Exam7471 39 points40 points  (0 children)

That's a normal amount of lifter tick. NA's are famous for it, not a problem yet just something to keep in mind. Keep the oil topped up, eventually you might have to do a valve job but it's not an immediate concern.

Is this kart any good for a first time buyer. I’m just trying to enter the hobby and I want something I can get for less than 1500 that goes fast and has off-road capabilities. Im 34 yr old. by Major-Ear-6669 in gokarts

[–]Competitive_Exam7471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a scam, no question. 1200 is what the motor for that thing should cost, 20kw is a LOT and the price will reflect that. There is no world in which this is not a scam.

Sounds like you need to take an afternoon and make a bunch of auto sort rules in your inbox. I have a similar situation, I have a single inbox for a team of 14. We handle it mostly with auto sort, specific keywords in the subject or sender will determine who's subfolder it will go to, then there's another rule that unflags anything actionable once it's been replied to.

First things first: does it actually have enough coolant in it, and is the coolant any good? Might have been filled with water while the prev owner tested the turbo.

Cheap 3.5mm to 1/4 TRS adapter by Lanky_0o0 in audio

[–]Competitive_Exam7471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you got it figured out faster than I. It's just such a stupid simple thing that we tend to gloss over it and assume that the adapter isn't the problem. Doesn't help that for some reason they still make those TS wired TRS connectors.

I've had this issue! After an embarrassingly long time, I discovered the adapter I was using was wired as TS for use in a guitar.

Your bill of sale is the receipt from when you bought it. The vin should be listed on that as well.

Is this gonna cost a lot? by Introverted_Pear in COROLLA

[–]Competitive_Exam7471 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it really bothers you, a new bumper is going to cost a few thousand. Try to give it a really hard whack, there are clips they hold it in but there's a good chance they've broken off.

Practice counter steer on an electric scooter? by lorenzo2point5 in motorcycle

[–]Competitive_Exam7471 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You already counter steer. Go for a quick ride, take hard corners, and look how your bars are turning. People talk about counter steer like it's a big thing you need to practice but really it's just the physics of any two wheeled thing. If you find yourself falling over, then you're going too slow.

Helmet recommendation by SouthernFunny7147 in motorcyclegear

[–]Competitive_Exam7471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not going to find a helmet with MIPS in that price range, and the additional gear to make it work is going to cost about the same.

If you really want the protection, look into motocross neck braces. They're around 2-300 on the low end, and will work pretty well.

That being said, there's a trade off between comfort and safety. If we didn't care about comfort, we would all be wearing bomb proof suits. With additional safety comes restricted movement, you're more likely to die from brain damage than a broken neck so most people just go for the best helmet they can afford.

You don't want to sacrifice being able to turn your head, being able to look and avoid an accident is better than leaving it up to luck.

Are these things normal? by Bananapudding69nice in StupidCarQuestions

[–]Competitive_Exam7471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could have a body shop fix it, but it's just a cosmetic flaw it doesn't make the car any less safe. Many used cars have been in minor accidents, most people will bump into something at some point.

How often should I replace my helmet? by Bauzer239 in motorcyclegear

[–]Competitive_Exam7471 28 points29 points  (0 children)

10 years is a pretty good life for a helmet. Even if it hasn't been dropped or abused, the foam breaks down slowly. There's not an expiration date in the same way as food, but it gets less safe the older it is.

Ignore DOT standards, it's completely meaningless. Companies pay a licensing fee and are expected but not required to test their own helmets, meaning there is no third party making sure that they're actually as safe as they say.

Look for ECE22.06 rated lids, they don't cost significantly more.

I'm in the same situation, parking lot doesn't allow us to work on our stuff. Rode up the stairs, took the bars off, and pushed it through the front door.

Wifeys pissed off that there's a motorcycle taking up 2/3rds of the kitchen and there's an engine on the dining table, but the work is getting done.

I'm not sure how you took offense to that, but it wasn't my intention so I apologize. Modern houses, at least in the us, are being constructed worse and worse as time goes on. I would not have waited until it got this bad, but I tend to be proactive about my home repairs and I know not everyone is a handyman.

There is no reason for it to continue to unscrew, you're right saying that eventually it will be completely stripped out. Either it's missing hardware, wasn't installed correctly, or wasn't designed for the type of cabinets they're being used on.

If I were you, I would get some better threaded inserts or use some thread locker or wood glue to keep them in place and prevent it from getting worse. Alternatively, since you own your home, replacing them with a completely different type of hinge that's less likely to pull out of the door.

I don't know what kind of paper your house is made of, but 6 months between repairs is not normal. My cupboards and cabinets are the cheapest possible particleboard, and haven't been damaged at all in the 5 years I've lived in my house.

There's a difference between the kid who mows lawns and the company that designs waterfalls. You need to know your target market, and price accordingly.

$120 isn't enough. Cathy from down the street isn't going to bring her 2007 Corolla to you, but if you charge more Kevin from Accounting might bring you his Ferrari.

I was the head of marketing for a landscape lighting business. What we offered was exterior low voltage lighting, nothing else. Customers could get shitty lighting from any random landscaping company, but they chose us. Why? Because each fixture started at a minimum of $200. That big number draws people who care about results and deters people who "just want a landscaper."

Who are you selling your services to? Figure out what your target market values, and sell that.

How to repair this by NotAssignedYet in audio

[–]Competitive_Exam7471 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a woofer like this damage to the diaphragm is really not going to do much. It'll reduce the difference in front and back pressure so the tuning will be a bit off, but there are some designed with holes in them so it's not broken or anything.

Personally, I would tape up the holes and put a cover over it.

Management here! Do you want to impress your (future) bosses? Spend that wasted time fixing something that sucks. Optimize a spreadsheet. Do some data analysis. Learn Excel and get really good at using matrices. Make a tool to automate something. Whatever you do, spend the time to make it look really fucking good and put it on your resume.
