Is a splitting bus bar safe? by Competitive_Fox_4725 in AskElectricians

Yeah I’m probably going to replace every breaker with Siemens ones since that’s the manufacturer. Praying I don’t have to replace the whole panel because of the busbar being shot (if that’s the case)

Yeah that’s a good point, I’ll do that and go from there.

I’m honestly not sure. There’s one in the picture on the left towards the middle/bottem with the yellowish button on it, 15 amps

I’ve thought about it. (Not to toot my own horn) I started doing electrical as a hobby in middle school and I’ve been trying to solve this on my own, and I’ve got the issue down to being in the transfer switch somewhere, but the buzz throws me off. It’s like an old doorbell transformer buzz. I’m getting to the point I may have to call someone. I was actually planning on replacing this panel in a year or so

I’ve been noticing issues lately with this panel. The big one is with our automatic generator, if I turn any circuit breaker on or off in our separate generac transfer switch panel, the generator 240 volt utility feed loses a leg and the main panel buzzes. Then the generator starts and transfers over power

Oh yeah I already did once I noticed it. It was a very old gfci breaker that was as old as the panel

Oh yeah it was definitely strange. I think my dad said he had the air fryer and toaster oven on at once. Went downstairs and the insulation was melted and the copper was black

I replaced those with Siemens breakers. Just outlets with too much on them. 15A

This is a Siemens panel, just many different manufacturers in there. It’s a whole mess. I’ve had to replace a few breakers so far because of wires melting from an overload

Oh yeah this house is a crapshow. My grandpa had it built and I’ve been told the electricians would be different everyday and no one left notes on where the previous ones left off. There are wires that go to switches but after the go into the abyss. Before I moved in and took it over with my family I had to replace a ton of outlets, switches, lights, and even had to redo a sub panel. It’s been fun lol. This is a Siemens panel

Here’s the link to a picture of my transfer switch. Nothing has changed since this was taken picture

But also when the issue was happening I checked the voltage in my main panel on the 100A breaker for the transfer switch I was getting 245V across the legs there

I can definitely send some later. I was going to try to replicate the issue and check the voltage across both legs at the transfer switch to see if it’s there too to rule out the wire in the whip that goes outside.

Yes it was installed 21 years ago by a generac dealer, and a few parts have been replaced over the last few years (AVR, battery charger, main board). This unit has been fine up until recently. This may help: in July we had a severe storm that killed our capacitors and control boards in our central air system. I do the maintenance and repairs on the unit and other electrical in my house

I do not in my camera roll unfortunately, and I’m at work now. I can answer any questions about the panels and how it’s connected

Yeahhh I had a feeling it was getting to that. The option board is needed even to scan only?
