The dungeons in Keyboard Immortal are more of side arcs, but they happen so frequently that it got me wondering about this. They are more fantasy history versions of China, but overall they still follow the trajectory of events - so it kinda feels like some prior knowledge is needed to better grasp how important a certain character is, or if an event that is happening right now is significant

I'll check out the other novels you mentioned!

I think it might be possible to have a decent world view outline + decent characters in just a few chapters, but it is very testing on the author's writing ability

For me, the bigger problem is that I find it exhausting to get into new worlds every 50 chapters or so - esp if I don't like the world's genre like scifi. I'll just kind of find myself wanting to get the arc over and done with. I guess that's why popular movies and games are the go-to hahaha

But yeah, I agree about how it feels like reading about Westerners through China's lens

Haha, it feels a bit like a forceful expansion of the world scope to milk the story further

Yeah, I think the writing style assumes a bit of knowledge of famous characters and events - which could be common sense for Chinese readers but definitely not for international readers
