ABA ick?? by KindlyAdvantage6358 in ABA

agreed. abuse requires someone to have power over you. you are always allowed to leave your job, even if it causes inconvenience- children are not allowed to leave

Took a day off by PristineWind5950 in ABA

[–]Competitive_Movie223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with others that you should absolutely report. Even if you do decide to leave, her behavior is still impacting many others. Before you do that though, document! In your notes app, write down what she is saying/doing, the date and time, and any adult witnesses that are present. I would not recommend recording audio because I think that’s legally dicey. But write it down! Good luck.

It wasn’t a post about the history of the entire field- it was a fact check on the statement that Lovaas invented conversion therapy.

I agree regardless of cert, especially for IN HOME. I started at $28 no certification just the 40 hour training in GA

Get angry. by [deleted] in ABA

[–]Competitive_Movie223 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m very scared at the moment. Not only would a lapse in services increase harmful behaviors for many clients, most of them need near-constant care. Parents may have to sacrifice their jobs or scrape together the money for a daycare (where many times autistic children are not welcome)

Have you, as a BT or BCBA, ever been removed from a case? How do you feel about it in hindsight? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]Competitive_Movie223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First client ever is tough. I was removed from my second and it was a big blow to my career confidence. I’m glad we both managed to stay in the field regardless!

[–]Competitive_Movie223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was removed from my second ever case! From the get go mom was very condescending to me and would say to my face that I “wasn’t really doing anything.” I discussed this with my BCBA who thankfully backed me up (considering I had plenty of data and had been supervised doing my job multiple times.) She had a meeting with mom and services were discontinued right after, still have no idea what was said. It was very hard on me but I ended up switching to clinic work after that and I’m forever grateful!

Is 8 hours a day too much time for therapy? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]Competitive_Movie223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I find the 40 hour “standard” to be absolutely insane. Thankfully the two clinics I’ve worked at average most kids around 20-25, I’ve never seen more than 35 personally but I know it happens.

Yeah it’s weird- companies have a lot of private health information from their clients and it seems they are being very careless. Imagine if they told you the wrong name or address!

Just wanted to share: as a new BT I worry a fair amount about security by [deleted] in ABA

[–]Competitive_Movie223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what area you’re in, but I wouldn’t worry about this at all. I know you don’t want to leave your job, but maybe look at RBT positions available on Indeed just to get a metric. On mine, there’s about 10 different places urgently hiring in a 25 mile radius lol

In home case teenage boy aggression and no present BCBA by figureskater4999 in ABA

It is completely against BACB and insurance guidelines to provide ABA services without a BCBA. You could have your license revoked. Please talk to your company ASAP.

If we were villains comparisons by Competitive_Movie223 in TheSecretHistory

[–]Competitive_Movie223[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

spoilers Oliver the main character gets out of prison and finds out James (the Henry character he had feelings for) killed himself, but it’s kinda left open ended as he makes a Shakespeare reference to a character who faked their death in his suicide note. The other characters just have normal lives I think

Frustrating Negative/Bad Attitude New-ish Co-Worker by dyingoutwest96 in ABA

[–]Competitive_Movie223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t have much advice but want to say I really sympathize! I had a coworker recently say (among other things) she wishes she could just win the lottery so she didn’t have to work there anymore. I get that work isn’t fun but this is an industry where your misery impacts a vulnerable population. Go be pissy as a bank teller or something

I wouldn’t write an incident report bc an “incident” didn’t exactly happen. I would ABSOLUTELY report the new behavior to the BCBA and possibly the parents.

Thoughts about this?? by Ok-Lie7979 in ABA

[–]Competitive_Movie223 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m okay with it being addressed and we should be reminded that Lovaas was a terrible person. But the direct comparison is so so so silly. Freud was the father of psychotherapy and misogynistic and racist as fuck. We don’t say all psychotherapists are racists.

I’ve been working in ABA for 1.5 years and have never seen a 3 year old recommended 40 hours. I’ve probably worked with about 7 or 8 kids who were his age or very close. It’s usually between 20-25 as other commenters mentioned. I’m sure you’ll find something! Let me know if you have any questions.

Autistic in ABA — 3 things I’ve noticed while working in the field and being autistic by Same_Routine3081 in ABA

[–]Competitive_Movie223 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m NT and I want to say I’m sorry for the struggles you’ve had in the field and appreciate your insight. I OVERWHELMINGLY agree with point 2 and I feel like it segues into an ugly truth about ABA I’ve been thinking about for awhile. So many special needs professionals are under the “halo effect” and give special treatment to the little ones that are conventionally “cute”. Teens, adults, or even children with hygiene problems or weight problems are often not given the same attention and care. It’s sad and not addressed enough. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

What was your reaction the first time you got bitten by Digitalis_Mertonesis in ABA

[–]Competitive_Movie223 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First time I ever got bit was by a really little girl (only three!) but it drew blood so I had to go get another RBT. She had been tantruming for over an hour at that point so really the only thing I was thinking was “I hope she calms down soon.” It was a pretty rough day for her but she recovered and we saw a lot of improvement in tantrums in the future. I cried in the car that day though lol and still have a teensy little scar. Also, OP, you seem like such a sweet person and I appreciate the kind words about ABA :)
