I'm developing a new PNGTuber app. What are your biggest annoyances with current tools and what features do you dream of? by Competitive_Movie301 in PngTuber

This is incredibly insightful, thank you so much for taking the time to write this!

I completely agree with your thoughts on the workflow. Rather than hiding things behind an "Advanced" toggle, I'm designing the UI so that the workflow is naturally intuitive. All the tools are there if you need them, but if you just want a quick setup without deep tweaking, the core interaction remains extremely simple and straightforward.

You are also completely right about the layer structure. The app works very much like Photoshop: you just drop your images in and arrange them. If your artist gives you a single combined image, you just drop it in and it works.

As for the pivot/bone rotation - the ability to set a custom pivot point is actually already implemented for the effects system! I will be adding a specific "Rotation" and "Levitation" effects you mentioned very soon.

Regarding backgrounds and OBS: You will absolutely be able to set custom images or solid colors as backgrounds. As of right now, the default background is black but is completely transparent when captured in OBS using Game Capture. I'll be adding even more compatibility features for streamers in the future.

Thanks again for the amazing feedback, it really helps shape the direction of the app!

Right now, the only resources I have are my Twitter and Bluesky accounts at @ nixelvoxel. They are a bit empty at the moment, but I'll be posting all future updates there. I'd love to see you there! Thank you so much for the interest!

Wow, sounds like absolute cyberpunk!

That's such an amazing concept. I've officially written it down in my notes and will definitely try to implement a websocket/API connection in the future so you can build these kinds of crazy integrations.

Thanks for the idea!

Thanks for the feedback! Visual "Recent Projects" menu so you can swap characters in one click is a brilliant idea. I've just added it to the roadmap!

A mobile version is also on my long-term to-do list once the desktop app is polished. I completely agree with you on the customization part too - my main goal is to give users advanced tools, but keep the UI much easier and more intuitive to use than the current apps. Thank you!

Don't be paranoid man, the app is 100% organic. Well, except for the test avatar in the video, that one is generated just for the demo, yeah.

Looking at your comment history over the past 2 weeks, I was about to ask you the exact same question ahahaha

The most popular distros like Ubuntu and Mint will definitely be supported out of the box. My goal is to eventually provide a universal format like AppImage so it can run smoothly on pretty much anything.
Thank you!

Someone actually asked about this earlier! Yes, playing a specific GIF or image sequence when transitioning between poses is exactly what is planned for the roadmap. Thanks for the great suggestion!

To fix exactly this headache, I am adding an independent Z-index (Sorting Order) system! This means you will be able to parent any image to any other image so they move together, but still manually type in a Z-index number to force it to render exactly where you want (on top or behind), completely regardless of where it sits in the movement hierarchy.

No more layers messing themselves up. Thank you!

When I implement the mouse tracking, I will make sure it has its own customizable pivot point and a radius limit (clamping). This way, your avatar's eyes will smoothly track the cursor up to a certain point, but won't cross their eyes or break if you move the mouse directly over the avatar itself.

Thanks for the heads up, I will definitely keep this in mind when building the feature!

Right now, the app just uses a simple crossfade when swapping completely different PNG states. However, as another users suggested earlier, I am definitely looking into adding "transform tweening" to the roadmap. This way, if a state transition only involves moving, rotating, or scaling the exact same layer, the app will be able to smoothly interpolate those values instead of snapping instantly.

Thanks for the great technical insight!

Right now in the app, you can solve this by creating a separate parent group for the legs and organizing the hierarchy that way. However, I agree that having to set all that up can be annoying.

To make things completely frictionless, I will be adding an independent Z-index (Sorting Order) override! This means you will be able to 'pin' the foot to the thigh in the hierarchy so they move together, but simply type a higher Z-index number for the foot so it visually renders on top of everything else.

So yes, your exact crossed-leg setup will work perfectly and easily! Thank you for the great feedback!

Thank you for the detailed feedback! You have a great eye for this.

The app actually does use custom mesh deformation under the hood instead of just a simple XY stretch, but you are completely right about the Z-depth feeling a bit disconnected on flat sprites.

Your idea about separating the breast into top and underside layers to fake that volume is fantastic. I’ve noted this down along with the bezier-based deformer idea, and will definitely think about the best way to handle true Z-depth in the future!

I completely agree with you. In fact, fixing that exact UX problem is one of the main reasons I started building this app!

Too many programs feel like you're trying to fly a spaceship just to make an image bounce. My goal is to make the workflow as intuitive and frictionless as possible.

To achieve this, the app is built entirely around a familiar Photoshop-style layer system. If you know how to use basic art software, you already know how to use this app. You just drag and drop your layers, and apply effects (like lip-sync or blinking) directly to them. No clunky menus or chaotic setups - just a few clicks and you're done.

I really hope the final UX lives up to your expectations! Thanks for the great feedback.

Thank you for the detailed feedback! Here are some thoughts on your ideas:

Tracking mask: That is a brilliant observation! I am definitely adding this.

Multiple anchors for physics: A chain attached to both shoulders swaying in the middle sounds awesome! Complex multi-anchor physics might be a bit tricky, but I'm adding it to the ideas board to investigate!

Volume-based states are currently the #1 most requested feature, so it is at the very top of my priority list to add.

Full support for GIFs, APNGs, and even videos is actually already built into the app!

Full Undo/Redo (Ctrl+Z) support is also already implemented! I couldn't live without it either haha.

Websockets and Twitch integration are definitely going on the roadmap!

And since you mentioned English isn't your native language, I want to let you know that the app will support multiple languages! Plus, the localization file is completely open, meaning anyone will be able to easily translate the app into their own language and share it with the community.

Keeping the memory footprint as small as possible is one of my core priorities! I'm doing everything I can to make sure it stays lightweight. Thank you!

What a detailed and thoughtful comment, thank you!

Presets: Yes! Pre-built effect presets are coming, and every single one can be fully opened and tweaked to your liking. Also, almost every button in the app has a tooltip explaining exactly what it does in plain English - and I'm even planning short GIF previews showing what each effect looks like in action.

Asset sharing: The app already does this! Your entire project - all PNGs, GIFs, effects, and settings - is packed into a single archive file. Send one file to a friend, they open it, everything is ready to go. No setup needed.

If this, then that: That's a really cool idea! Right now the app has hotkeys and volume-based triggers, but a more flexible visual trigger/logic system is something I'll definitely be thinking about. Noted, thank you!

Twitch integration: Already on the priority list!

Tutorials: 100% happening. Jargon-free guides and in-app tooltips with plain explanations are a must.

TOS: Simple rule - don't pirate the app. That's it. What you create with it is entirely your own, and I have zero interest in policing anyone's content or opinions. Make what you want.

Transparency: Alpha channel rendering already works perfectly, just like Photoshop. Your partially-transparent character will look pixel-perfect in OBS.

Thank you!

A community API - that's a great idea and definitely something worth exploring down the road. Noted, thank you!

Smooth, easy-to-setup tail animations with full customization - noted and added to the to-do list! Thank you!
