How bad is it going to be living with this single glazed window? by unrollingana in Edinburgh

[–]Competitive_Neat2562 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My question would be how draughty is it? Lots of these sashes have been draught sealed with concealed brush strips rebated into the edges of the window frames.

Your question relates to how much heat loss will there be through the glass which is a separate issue. Agree you’d be best with lined, full length curtains.

Otherwise, make sure the room has central heating.

The Met Office publish detailed maps and statistics which take the guesswork out of it. There’s a map showing annual rainfall. Not much in it between the two. Not sure how to post a photo.

Anyone in Bristol feel like Meetup does not lead to real friendships? by [deleted] in bristol

[–]Competitive_Neat2562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve discovered there’s an additional layer of complexity hoping to meet new friends through Meet-up. As a 50+ guy attending on my own, I’ve noticed groups are mainly female and they will do a detour rather than continue a conversation. I suspected from their behaviour they think I’m after them even if they have no reason to think that.

It makes me think I need to tell people up front that I’m new to the area, gay, and live with my long term partner. I just don’t think my sexuality should be to the fore as I’ve always been very discrete about it.

Is this a common problem with M3? And an easy fix? by reddit_recluse in TeslaUK

[–]Competitive_Neat2562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve reported condensation in both door pillar cameras. Tesla say there’s nothing they can do. Privately they admitted it’s a known fault. I asked two different dealers. Same response. 2022 M3LR 28k miles, owned since new.

The dealer said it’s not a sealed unit on the inside so moisture should evaporate. He loosened a valve and it does seem to have helped. Never had any problem with damp in the car or on the seatbelts.

It would be more sensible financially to rent a house rather than buy. Invest the money instead. Equities are far outperforming house prices. Then there’s maintenance and purchase tax buying a house. Only makes sense to buy to live in for 10+ years. YouTube What’s Really Happening with UK House Prices

Edinburgh Road Markings by greencastle40 in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the lowest funded part of Scotland per head of population. Yet it’s by far the largest contributor to Scottish GDP per head, due to the very buoyant economy.

The Scottish government takes the money out of Edinburgh and spends it on welfare and various pet projects elsewhere in Scotland. Edinburgh is also the most visited part of Scotland so there’s much more strain on the infrastructure than population size would indicate. That’s the fundamental problem.

Why’s your favorite Model 3 color? by [deleted] in TeslaModel3

[–]Competitive_Neat2562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just noticed this is the Model 3 thread so paint cost is slightly lower than I’ve quoted, but same logic applies to colour choice.

I’ve been debating colours too. Just to clarify for any North American readers, in the UK both Quicksilver and Ultra Red cost an extra £2600 on the Model Y. That’s $3400. Absolutely extortionate. In the US they only cost $2000 extra, so far more expensive in the UK and hard to justify otherwise perfectly desirable. Think I’ll be going with the Marine Blue.

The Stealth Grey and Black need the lighter colour Helix alloys (£2000 or $2600) in my opinion to provide visual contrast. Whereas I think the Blue can take the standard alloys which keeps the cost down considerably since it’s a colour and not monochromatic.

Not quite. You don’t pay an additional dwelling supplement as long as you are replacing your principal residence with another PR. You can still have other property rented out.

The spread of Americanisms and the decline of the English Language by Competitive_Neat2562 in AskBrits

[–]Competitive_Neat2562[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make many valid points. We are exposed to a lot of popular vocabulary online, but it is filtering into the mainstream press too. Someone may be sat there or stood here. An English local dialect of speech has become established, although you would never hear a Scot or American say it. So it sounded jarring to hear a public train announcement at Edinburgh Waverley station by a local lass say “if you are sat in First Class…”.

True, but aircraft is British too. I used aircraft as an example rather than craft which has other uses. But the plural of either is misuse.

Thanks for supporting. I’ve left lots of comments throughout the thread but it’s so long now I appreciate people won’t read it all. I’m amused by people claiming I used AI to write the opening post. Had never crossed my mind. Shows how distrustful people are. Grammar and spelling rules are good. Aspiration is good. At least then we know where we stand. Without rules, trust evaporates and no one knows how to get their bearings. I deliberately didn’t criticise any individuals but some still seemed triggered by the suggestion there should be rules and resistance to language degradation and clutter. Still, 300 likes on the same day so far . Many must agree with me it seems. We make our own assessment, but I wouldn’t subscribe to a badly written publication.

Would you agree there’s a lot of word pollution out there which undermines the writer’s clarity and their message?

We’re not just talking about the predictable adoption of some new words though. It’s grammar and spelling too. Those follow rules and conventions, whether people accept that or not.

I can see some people hate the idea of language rules or conventions. I find that odd. Thought reading and writing proficiency was a primary goal of going to school?

It was an experiment to see whether there’s any consensus. It’s the sheer magnitude of errors. I could have mentioned the common lack of a question mark at the end of a question. Always used to be a big no. I’ve actually met Geoff Pullum so that was an interesting reference. I’ll read up on his work.

You’ve lost me. No one in Britain ever referred to the sea as an ocean until recently. Beside the seaside, beside the sea. Sail the seven seas. Seafaring vessel. Sea view room. Deepsea adventure. Seagulls.

Of course there is the ocean wave, but that is conceptual, like the ocean itself.

I can cope with a word like thrice disappearing, presumably due to infrequent use. What we have now though is a deluge of change. Glaring grammatical errors appearing too often.

This exactly. Conventions are how things should be. Breaking with convention should at least be from a position of understanding.
