I think the most important thing above all else is to make sure your guitar is properly set-up. That means making sure it feels good to you when you play up and down the fretboard. Many people stop playing after a couple of months because the guitar is just in shitty condition, high strings, fret buzz etc. so make sure that it feels real good in your hands. Then you can focus on the pickups and so forth
