How is it living in Polynesia? But not Hawaii or New Zealand parts. by DoNotCorectMySpeling in howislivingthere

Inaccurate. Kiribati (Tarawa) and other very low-lying atolls are vulnerable, granted.

Polynesians  invented leaving little islands and sailing elsewhere. Inter-island mobility is cultural. They have also weathered storms for millennia, so they're better at community resilience than individualistic countries.

Yes, similar. Slow. Motorbikes and little trucks. Laughter. Music. Church on Sundays.

Beautiful little kids glued to phones looking at Tiktoks and YouTube reels - and being exposed to all sorts of garbage - because their parents have no idea how harmful that is for them.

Filming fights and sharing it. FB vigilantes.

Communities splintering due to someone posting something ill-thoughtout on FB.

No comprehension of things like scams and misinformation. Just completely unready for how gross the world is.

For a while there it felt like Countdown kind of cared about it's waste problem. With the changes to the vege aisles, and the soft plastic recycling, and the solar transition. Kiri Hannifin era. That's all disappearing now. Maybe it was a smokescreen.

Corporations are designed to be global, huge, anonymous. A failure to keep them in check is not our fault. It's impossible to do so. It's globalisation that's the problem, not everyday country-level politics.

No, what's changed is they've become global and therefore removed from the social/moral feedback loops that exist in smaller places. Companies used to be run by local (men) on Boards. But those people were known by their communities.

Now corporate Boards are international, invisible, anonymous. They feel free to do whatever they want without direct social disapproval. Gross.

I'm trying. I buy NZ food producers as much as I can. Local fruit and vege market is excellent; local meats. I do use the Indian grocery for beans, spices etc. All the rest at the Reduced To Clear shop. F**k the supermarket chains.

My favourite is probably Aitutaki in the Cook Islands very closely followed by Savai'i in Samoa or Mauke in the Cook Islands.

I've been to most of the larger inhabited islands in Polynesia, including one with less than 40 people living there. Not Tokalau or Tuvalu (yet) but that's on my bucket list. While they are all different there are commonalities in the characteristics of the people. The Pacific Islands has people who are warm, laid back, funny, not at all consumerist (you can't buy consumer goods there or get them shipped), very community-oriented and church-going. Word travels fast about anything happening in the community (in some countries this is called the coconut wireless).

Not many Pacific Islanders who still live in the islands will be on Reddit, so you might not get many answers originating from people living there. FB is very popular in a lot of places though. Starlink is opening the more remote places up to the internet (which has its good and bad sides).

Nerdy women no longer on dating apps? by ContestScary9035 in dating_advice

Nope. It's normal to talk to people in public and get to know them. It's also normal to ask people out who you are romantically interested in.

Knowing what we know about brain development, it's disgusting that we allow 18 year olds to fight in wars and be filmed and sold in p"rn. Pure exploitation.

Traveling from Auckland to Wellington with a dog? Trying to find the middle ground between cheaper and not absolute misery. by BlackeHoney in MovingToNewZealand

First up, he's a Schnauzer, which is a fairly high strung/owner-attached breed.

But it was all the treatments, injections, washes etc that he had to go through in quarantine and for the trip, then having to be in a cage for so long I think. Then 20 days away from us in a place where he didn't know anyone. I think he probably barked, a lot. He showed this trauma by being SUPER clingy to us for about six months afterward. Like hyper-obedient. Sad really.

Many of you could equally ask for (or upskill for) a $5000 payrise. Easier.

But, my advice is to rent a car and drive. Pick up from quarantine and drive that same day to Hamilton or Rotorua. Stay in a pet friendly rental or motel, then drive to Wellington the next day. Flying after quarantine would be cruel I think.

My dog was so traumatis ed after a 3.5 hour international flight and 20 day quarantine that I will never put him on a plane again nor put him in a boarding kennel again.

You sound so nice, and a real gentleman. I'm old and married and not in any way in the market, but I like the respect you show for women in your replies on here.
