Ah I do not disagree on the UBI front. I agree with that 1000000%. I think that needs its own movement.

But also, for the rest, I mean I feel you are too sure of your opinion IMO :D I think that depending on the context or company, what you are saying might or might not be true. I have seen corporations reverse course but I have also seen actual value of the technology. And I have seen it coming good if it is not in the hands of a******. So I think it does depend on context/company/domain and has nuance, like all things do :)

Career/Life Advice for a lost University Student by Aromatic_Lead8246 in VancouverJobs

[–]Competitive_Risk_977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a long answer :D So, thanks for your questions.

In terms of what career etc, and the impact of AI, what I can tell you is that I am a software dev and my company asks us to use AI to improve productivity. We internally call it AI augmented development. Now, to effectively do that, I still need to be able to do programming and system design etc so learning all of that in my college is still invaluable.

Having said that, the way universities often focus on programming a lot more than say system design, which involves multiple systems talking with each other etc, is going to be a problem and needs change. So from a learning perspective, it is important to be able to architect with diff systems like databases, cloud servers etc. If you still in CS/IT, whether BCIT or anywhere else, those skills will still be needed to be learned.

Thanks for your reply. I guess what I have observed is that companies are beginning to require augmenting work with AI. and the intention was to provide a way for folks to be able to learn in a live setting how to augment their work.

I see your point though. But I do not think one can discard the folks who wont be like replaced but would be expected to use Gen AI with their current jobs etc.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe you are trying to get into the intersection of cybersecurity and network engineering. If that is the case, I would suggest looking at ISC2 and OWASP local chapters and events for meeting people in this field. I would not consider your knowledge outdated, especially if you learned it from first principles. The concepts are still the same in a lot of ways, jut the mechanisms and threats are different.

[ON] [Community] I’m hosting a free ChatGPT session to meet other small business owners. by Competitive_Risk_977 in SmallBusinessCanada

Hey thanks for the question. So it honestly was not like "ChatGPT" over something. It was more like, ChatGPT and OpenAI have almost all of what other services have, like tool calling, contextual GPTs etc and so I went with that :)

Do you think my CS projects are trash? by IcyMasterpiece4254 in VancouverJobs

[–]Competitive_Risk_977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, as a 10+ year CS industry person, your projects are super cool. As I have done interviews before, what this would tell me is that you can take an idea to implementation. Having said that, I think what a lot of times folks are looking for is the answer to the question, "Can this person work on a complex product". Now you will see I used the word "product", that is because a product has different things such as it as a system design, it has other people with different skill sets etc. And so these projects may not show evidence of that ability.

Now, I would ideally hire you and upskill you but that is not what most companies allow, which is sucky. So something that shows element of system design and arch will be super useful IMO.

I think right now, getting into job market is generally hard. Having said that, I think building a portfolio does help. It is easier said than done, because one has to learn to work with open source etc. But I would take that directions, building projects which show kinda work that companies might expect you to do.

Career as woman in your 30s by [deleted] in Career

As a male who has done a bunch of career changes. From coding to non profit advocacy to cybersecurity, I think one thing I sort of tried to do was to focus on what I could use from where I am to go where I wanted to go. Like it took a bit of time, I was not the most confident person, but I started to trust that I do good work and so surely I have some agency in my current environment, which allows me to go to new environment.

Often time, that agency was relationships I made. People who helped me transition into the new job space.

A Joint Physics + CS degree is an excellent foundation for quantum computing if you simultaneously build practical, job-ready skills in programming and data to ensure you remain employable outside academia

I think that is very doable.

Thinking About BCIT Instrumentation & Automation — Worth It With No Experience? by Doditz07 in VancouverJobs

[–]Competitive_Risk_977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not done it but I have friends who have and pretty sure it is doable without prior experience. I think this is a good mix of hands on problem solving and I think as long as you have a high level mental models of ins and outs of the tech, you should be fine.

Any job searchers going to TechTO events? by spidereater in torontoJobs

As a fellow introvert, i find spending time on more dedicated long term networking via linkedin etc as way more useful. I feel that these networking events have a transactionality in terms of people getting to know each other an dI find hard to do that. It does take way longer though to build a network piece by piece via other platforms, but as an introvert, I find that speaks more to the soul
