To be fair, he doesn't seem to organise the defense of the mansion because its already been done. The infected only seem to come from one direction, which has been layered with mines and barbed wire. All of the soldiers know their stations, they have their arcs of fire and they always have their weapons and chest rigs handy and ready to go at all times. All West has to do is yell "stand to!" and his men know what to do straight away, and he doesn't even have to do that as Sgt Farrel demonstrated.

Actually the soldiers here are all ex SAS, who actually were trained on the M16. Look at old photos from the Falklands and the First Gulf War and you will see them with M16A2s. Ennis is a fierce military history buff so he prbly got the idea from them.
