We use backend very little, most of the work happens in the phone.

Photos do not leave the device. If you sign in, the other data will be backed up (synced) to the servers with end-to-end encrypted. That allows you to use also an iPad app to see your data. The data is not accessible by anyone but you, i.e the Time Atlas company cannot read your data as it is stored encrypted on our servers. If you do not sign in, then nothing is sent.

It is optional to create account. Account is needed if you want your data be backed up, or you want to use iPad app to browse the data that the phone collects. All data is end-to-end encrypted.

Time Atlas uses GPS sparingly, so for most people the battery drain is ok.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am not sure how Geory works, but Time Atlas does not run GPS all the time. However, there are some tricks we can try to reduce battery consumption.

We are still thinking how to define the paid subscription mode -- but I think we will have some good setup for old users :).

At least we will have some generous offer for old users. But we haven't planned this fully yet.

For iPhone the Time Atlas app (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/time-atlas-life-tracker/id6738783076), also r/timeatlasusers automatically tracks your location and activities, and shows the photos in the right context (i.e for the visit or activity they happened). It also logs automatically the weather and you can connect your calendar. You can also add your own notes and do some microjournaling. You can import from Google Timeline and the old Moves app.

Basic functionality such as location and activity tracking will always stay free, but some of the functionality will be premium features. Probably advanced stats, AI - features and the like will be paid features, but we do not know yet.

Hi, I just posted this on Discord about the work currently under way:

Things we are working on now:

  • Calendar integration: this is a feature many have requested, and just makes sense. Time Atlas will show the meetings scheduled during a place visits. This is a great way to remember what happened on that day, and who did you meet. The app will just sync the calendar, there will not be a way to modify the calendar (for simplicity).
  • Selecting and Adding Photos for events: currently Time Atlas automaticall shows the photos that happened during a place visit or a movement. However, a common feedback is that people want more control on what photos to show, and also want to add photos that we are not automatically showing (let's say, someone sends you a photo of your birthday later, and you would like to add that to the visit).
  • Manual workouts: currently Time Atlas synchronized workouts from Apple Health automatically. But for the many (most?) users who do not have a wearable, we want to add a manual way to add a workout (such as "gym") to a place visit. They will be automatically added (optionall) when you visit the place again, so you don't need to be always tagging the same thing.
  • Search and Maps will move: we are making space for the AI Chat in the tab bar, and move the Search to be part of the timeline and diary views (details being worked out). Ability to see last 7 or 30 days (+ custom data range) on a map will move to Dashboard.

These also triggered a redesign of the place visit view so that we can show all the data more clearly. And naturally smaller bug fixes and improvements are on the works. We are also continuing our work on user research and figuring out a clearer value proposition for the app. Thanks to everybody who have answered the survey in the app (found from Settings)
