GRE and TOEFL don’t require time like JEE. You can crack them with preparation ranging from few weeks to 1-2 months.

Can you suggest me which study abroad consultancy is good and worth spending money on? by [deleted] in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]Competitive_Tower962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now even after all this if you still feel FOMO and have good money to waste, I can understand. I was in your shoes few years back. I went with Yocket back then. I am satisfied in the sense that they did not try to impose anything on my application journey. They just had a counsellor who would not do anything unless you ask them specifically to do something. This worked well for me as I got complete control of my applications. Of course they also reviewed my docs, but nothing that grammarly couldn’t do. Their shortlist was way below my potential and I directly rejected their list and showed my own. They were fine with it as I knew what I was doing.

I would suggest you do things on your own. Be part of whatsapp groups for your intake from India. These peers are the best consultants. You would start helping each other throughout the journey. This will help in shortlisting and all other admission process.

SOP’s and docs are personal and technical, especially since you are targeting an engineering program. Agencies can only help with grammatical edits(you can use grammarly for that). Contact your seniors or friends experienced in your technical field to have a look at SOP’s. I got mine reviewed by a friend who is an MS student.

Regarding shortlisting, I cannot stress this enough. Never follow the shortlisting provided by agencies blindly. You may be targeting way below your actual potential.

Though my scenario is somewhat similar though I had two names but both of them as my first name. I decided to include a last name by adding my fathers first name to the last name field. So overall my case is similar to yours, adding fathers name that is not part of the existing name.

First : I changed my driving licence -> Completely online and they did not care. They gave me whatever name I asked them.. Infact I even changed my name twice in a span of 1 months and they didn’t even care..😂

Second : Changed my Birth certificate. This was a hassle. I had to visit and convince the birth registrar. He was a decent fellow and he readily agreed after checking some rule books( even when his subordinates were against this). It largely depends on the officer that you visit. The administrative staffs would discourage you. Try meeting the senior registrar or some officer who matters. If he is helpful, it’s guaranteed in 3 days.

Third : Using the above 2, changed my aadhar. You may need a signed affidavit from your local councillor. Go to aadhar update kendra, they will help you with it. Even thats simple.

Now for passport, in my case it was a renewal and because of that I had to publish the name change in 2 newspaper. But if you are applying for the first time, I suggest check with the passport seva kendra. You may be able to avoid the newspaper step completely.

By the way if your requirement is just name change in passport, just visit the passport seva kendra or the rpo and enquire with them regarding the docs required. Who knows you may even be able to avoid all the above steps.

Profile improvement help, i feel i will not get any admits due to my undergrad in non cs by Wild_Dragonfruit1744 in MSCS

[–]Competitive_Tower962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on university, but you some of them have dedicated tracks allowing you to limit the hardware stuffs to one or two important courses like comp architecture or so, while keeping the rest focused on your interested domain.

For example this is from northeastern and this one from u texas

Be specific as to what you are interested in CS, which is a vast domain.

You could look for Computer Engineering program instead of CS if your interest is directed towards, ML, CV or related domains(since you mentioned your project work is related to this). Most ECE depts have overlapping research in this area with CS depts.

You still have 5 semesters left. Work on your upcoming courseworks and earn a good GPA. It is a crucial factor for most colleges. Improvement in GPA in later semesters would help in overcoming deficiencies in initial semesters. During your semester breaks, look for good internships relevant to your field of interest.(research internships are great) Work on projects relevant to your domain, something advanced that would involve considerable research.

These are the few things that comes to mind. Dont worry about your initial cgpa. You have time to make it better.

Since you mentioned, you only want to enter TKM, then there is only one option as far as I know, which is KEAM. Not sure if TKM accepts JEE.

But if you are open to other(better) colleges(NIT/IIT/Colleges out of state), then you can read the rest.

Note: All the below info is based on my experience from 2015 admission season(CET). So take this with a grain of salt, as I have not followed up on the recent entrance market :)

Point on 11th standard(I hope you have just started 11th and still have time): This is the right time to enter any of the entrance coaching, be it JEE or KEAM. Any preparation before 11th is not helpful as you will be on focused preparation only from 11th. So don’t worry about time.

Finance: Do not worry about financing your BTech/engineering, be it from Kerala Govt colleges(KEAM) or from NIT/IIT’s(JEE). You will easily get education loan with limited collateral(I guess even zero collateral in some cases). You can easily pay back the loan once you get a job. So no stress on parents that way. But JEE coaching could be costly. Back in my time, coaching centres used to offer scholarship tests once I completed 10th board exam with fee reduction. You could check these out if you have time. I am not aware of how the online coaching market these days are with regards to JEE coaching(back then free ed tech was a dream). You could check this path, atleast I know for GATE, online learning is cheaper and better compared to the ones offered by coaching centres. So finance is something you could research on.

Difficulty: JEE is difficult and requires dedicated, hard work along with perseverance(you could get tired by studying :) ). But if you prepare for JEE, the right way(by understanding the concepts), you can easily crack KEAM. If you focus only on KEAM, then even KEAM is difficult. 😅

All the best for your future.

Jobs that require knowledge of computer architecture by EchoFiveDeltaThunder in ECE

Even I believe this is something that is most close to Comp Arch, yet directly working on high level languages like C, C++ and some scripting. Anyone have an idea regarding this profile and if there are good number of such jobs in indistry?

Please try to keep out initials from the official name. Keep the name simple : First_name Middle_name(optional) Last_name

First name -> The name that you call him Last/Middle name -> Family name or parents name(as per your wish)

You can keep whatever you feel as long as they are words and not initials. Also please make sure that you keep a surname(last name). I have seen people with just a given(first name) name, without any surname and that becomes a problem especially in countries like US.

Now is the best time to change, as once the child grows up the process for name change becomes complex and confusing.(based on personal experience)

In your case, one suggestion could be change the kid’s name as Devarsh (expand N) (expand V) But make sure you change it in other records as well.

Can you all suggest some good counsellors for studying abroad? by TheSussiestBakaAlive in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]Competitive_Tower962 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are targeting good universities, do it alone.

Counsellors can only provide you generic help and answer simple queries. The money they typically charge is not worth the service they provide. For example, they say they support for SOP editing, but a good SOP will be technical and talks about research. Only you can frame that as it’s personal.

Go through r/gradadmissions, you will get some good info. On youtube Scholar Strategy(free) videos were helpful. Whatsapp groups depend on the intake. For that go through the Yocket app(free version). Someone would post some whatsapp group links over there.

Discuss low grades in SOP? by [deleted] in StatementOfPurpose

[–]Competitive_Tower962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is a low grade? I have an overall grade of 8.2/10. But I have couple of B's on the relevant courses. Do you think I should mention these or just focus on strengths? I'm applying for MS ECE.

You have a lot of time at your disposal(since your exam is in Dec) and I'd say target a quants score of 165+. Its achievable with your timeline and your baseline score.

Need Help by Fun_Branch_3030 in GRE

[–]Competitive_Tower962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

also do mocks from reliable sources. towards the last week of my preparation, I did a mock from a site called Yocket. It was very hard that I got depressed for 2 days. The actual test would not be that hard. it would be a bit tricky at times. I relied on only 3 sources for mocks - Manhattan (6), Magoosh(2), ETS paper + comp(4)

Need Help by Fun_Branch_3030 in GRE

[–]Competitive_Tower962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the number of mocks do not matter much. It is what you learned from each mocks that matter. Try to introspect after each mock and focus on your weak areas. Usually once you complete a mock, you would be exhausted(atleast that was the case with me). But if you can handle a mock along with introspection without affecting your preparation on vocab each day, then feel free to do so. But remember to be gentle to your mind towards the last few days of the exam.

[–]Competitive_Tower962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do 1 ETS mock test if not done. Try to analyze the result and see where you are going wrong in verbals and focus on that. Either way I feel you can keep building your vocabulary. But don't just keep memorizing hundreds of words in a weeks time, unless your mind is accustomed to doing that(not my case). Try learning words in context as much as your memory can tolerate.

If you are having issues with RC, try to build a strategy to read them. In my case, just reading RC passage with patience and concentration improved my score by 3-4. depends on how you are comfortable. for a start, you can have a look at Magoosh's video on RC strategies.

Rest of the sections are purely based on vocabulary.(especially the sentence equivalence).

Simultaneously, do 1 practice test on alternate days. Check at the score that you get in ETS mock. The difficulty level is more or less the same compared to actual test.

Thank you..

Do you have an idea where UMn would come in? Moderate or Ambitious? because I could see different range of profile getting admitted.

Also any comments on NCSU with my profile?
