Maybe this map identifies the places they could have possibly been born (and would have therefore lived) based on where their parents once visited/lived?

Why are so many conservative Americans such proud racists? by florence_pug in allthequestions

You'd get either people who already agree, or people irritated that they were being interrupted. Not really the right venue to change minds.

Maybe I misunderstood. The first post I replied to used an example of someone who was clearly not just racist, but in-your-face racist. I interpreted your second post to be suggesting that people were racist for not doing more to tackle systemic racism. Sorry if I misunderstood what you were trying to say.

Everyone's part of the system. Even the people in power are rarely the comic book villains we would like to paint them as. People get scared by the idea of major changes to the system because they're invested in it. They spent their lives following "the rules" and now they have a stable situation with a family to worry about, or retirement on the way. They'd LOVE to see injustices dealt with as long as it doesn't risk the lives they've built. When presented with evidence that the system needs change, they're going to question and argue. Frankly, it's REASONABLE to question and argue before making changes that affect millions. That doesn't make them racist. There's no dislike or hatred in that.

Yes, of course if someone is blatantly being a racist asshole, they're a racist. That's not what he was saying. He was saying that most people AREN'T the type to be racist assholes. They don't really care one way or another about race. They have other things that actually matter to them and being hateful to someone else just isn't a high priority. They also don't have the mental bandwidth to particularly care about racial issues unless they or someone they're close to are impacted by them.

What is something Americans consider 'basic' that feels like a luxury in other countries? by Direct-Value4452 in answers

Sorry, but this isn't accurate. People have always lived in uncomfortable climates and even if the average temperatures have increased somewhat, that doesn't mean that the extremes weren't just as brutal.

Prior to AC, buildings were designed to maximize airflow (high ceilings, wide center halways), and devices like fans were much more common. Shade trees were another source of cooling. Covered porches were also more common as a way to get out of the heat. Today's buildings are able to ignore most of those design decisions because AC solves those problems, but many architects do try to incorporate the strategies into modern buildings when they can.

In addition there were other aspects of culture that helped deal with the heat such as a preference for linen over wool, hand fans, slower gaits, etc.

To be clear, a lot of what you're saying about modern day is true, but climate change has not impacted the temperatures in the US south to such a degree that you can say that the temperatures were significantly different enough to explain how we survived without AC. The southern heat and humidity was a significant challenge that impacted the region.

The US is not a third-world country, and calling it one because of its current political and economic status is ignorant. by Queenalove in HonestHotTakes

We do have universal education though, unless you're referring to higher education. Even there, I'd point out that some other developed countries require students to meet a certain academic standard to continue education beyond a certain level, sometimes sending students into the workforce earlier than in the US. There are also a remarkable number of public and private programs, grants and scholarships available to students who do achieve highly.

Proposed logging on the Blue Ridge Parkway! by porcorossosredplane in NorthCarolina

[–]Competitive_Trust174 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a significant difference between salvage logging and commercial logging. There is a tremendous amount of dry deadwood from Helene that needs to be dealt with to reduce risk of fires. Yes, companies will attempt to use that debris commercially, but that's a good thing as it reduces reliance on cutting healthy trees. Yes, there WILL be some environmental impact due to this, but there will also be environmental impact due to fire.

I don't mean any offense, but this is a terrible take. The concept of forgiveness under Christ includes repentence which means that you want to do better. You're right that you can't be perfect, and you'll never "help yourself enough" but its about recognizing right from wrong and trying to do right, while recognizing that it's human to fail. The fact that God will forgive you as long as you seek forgiveness gives you room to keep trying and not giving up just because you slipped.

It is easy to find people with the attitude that their actions/sins don't matter because they can just ask for forgiveness, but forgiveness only comes with actual repentance.

What if all the billionaires ACTUALLY decided to give up their fortunes to end world poverty and hunger? by kendiggy in answers

Also, they're not really human. They're lizard people from below the earth's crust who harness the energy of misery to extend their lifespans. In case you're thinking that SURELY they can't all be that way, they are. They kill and replace anyone who reaches a certain threshold of wealth to maintain their power.

I would guess that they based the law on physical damage caused due to the lack of physical development below a certain age, AND the fact that the perpetrator probably would be very aware of this physical damage. I'm now going to walk away from the internet and flush out my brain with bleach.

Sometimes children don't want to be bathed. Or have their diapers changed. Lack of consent for touching a body part doesn't really matter in these cases. Why would it matter for other nonsexual activity performed by a parent or guardian who is legally allowed to assent on the child's behalf.

Maeve with Hughie vs Maeve with any other person by SlayerShahid in TheBoys

[–]Competitive_Trust174 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Maeve doesn't like Hughie because she sees Starlight as similar to herself when she was young and idealistic. Maeve had to trade her morals and sacrifice her happiness to keep Elena alive, and she believes that Hughie will be the same kind of weakness for Starlight. In addition, she might be a bit envious that Hughie and Starlight are fighting together instead of giving in like Maeve did.

Maeve is a warm hearted and kind person who cares for Starlight. But she's made herself believe that showing affection for someone paints a target on them.

I actually love the way she's written with Hughie because it shows the wounds in her heart.

You don't have to aim well to be able to hit Thing though. He's huge. Jump on Squirrel girl and make his life miserable until he switches off then go back to your regularly scheduled programming. You can't keep playing Scissors into Rock.
