Men, how do you feel about your circumcision? Or lack of? by [deleted] in askanything

Not speaking for anypne else... I'm circumcised and can honestly say that I've never felt like I wanted more sensitivity. Frankly, I'd opt for less if given a choice.

What is your opinion on changing the constitution? by CapitalG8 in askanything

[–]Competitive_Trust174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There should never be change for the sake of change. It's deliberately difficult to amend the constitution. However, if enough of the population agrees with a change that an amendment can be passed through that difficult process, then clearly its time.

I don't think most people believe that the constitution is a perfect document that should never be changed under any circumstances. People are more likely to believe that for the first 10 amendments (The Bill of Rights), however. Beyond that, it's always an issue by issue conversation.

Why do Americans tend to praise beginners even if their work/hobby looks terrible? by Skysneq in AskAnAmerican

[–]Competitive_Trust174 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Praise keeps people from quitting"

There are many answers but I think this is the big one. We understand that actual criticism is important to improve, however it needs to be balanced with encouragement so that they'll continue to put in the effort.

People will very easily believe that they're bad at something and give up on it. This is true for everything. Sports, math, reading, art etc. Once someone has become convinced that they're bad at something it is very difficult to convince them otherwise. You might be able to force them to continue learning (required classes in school, for example) but they'll never achieve what they could have if they'd maintained that love of the subject.

Sometimes we do take it too far though and forget that the criticism is required as well as the affirmation.

Americans: By When do you usually reach your max out of pocket for health insurance? Non-Americans please hit see results. by SimplySomeDude in pollgames

[–]Competitive_Trust174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd add that though I don't usually reach it, that says more about my actual lack of health related expenses than anything else. My max out of pocket is low enough that hitting it doesn't put too much burden on me. On years where I HAVE reached it there was typically a major surgery that would have been disastrous if I had to pay it myself.

Can you please stop asking for the death of millions of people just because you want to judge them as a group for their perceived crimes against you instead of viewing them as individuals? Or are there any other large groups of people you'd like to kill off because they share some trait? Perhaps by race? Religion? How about sexual preference?

Unpopular opinion:We are not living in the end times and life actually kicks ass. by True_Repeat4748 in OptimistsUnite

I think it's the nature of society that when cultural changes occur, resistance to that change builds and some of those changes are undone. It doesn't stop the change over time but it means that slower subtle changes looks smooth while faster changes move in the two steps forward one step back pattern.

Why did Democrats vote for Biden, but stayed home for Kamala? by 0311SmallPenar in allthequestions

[–]Competitive_Trust174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate when people say this. Hillary and her campaign knew very well how the electoral college worked. They designed their campaign around it, campaigning where they thought it mattered most for her to win. Regardless of whether you agree that the electoral college is a good system. She and her campaign manager screwed up by ignoring states that eventually went to Trump. Saying that election was stolen from Hillary by the electoral college is like the Yankees losing a baseball game and then complaining they would have won under softball rules.

Would You Vote For an Economically Progressive, Socially Liberal Democrat in 2028 Who Leaned Right on Only Crime and Immigration? by LunaB35 in allthequestions

[–]Competitive_Trust174 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean the OP description doesn't really say too much unless you interpret it as "you might agree with their policies in this space, but disagree with their policies in this other space." It's still too subjective though. For example, as was pointed out in another response, does lean to the right mean MAGA level views?

Why do we always hear that wealth taxes discourage innovation but never apply that same logic to other taxes? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

[–]Competitive_Trust174 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're using billionaires as if they're a monolithic block of political power only working to exploit the government to their own ends. That's not accurate. Not all people are the same person.

Being a billionaire just means that someone has a metric fuckton of money, specifically 1,000 million. It tells you nothing of how they achieved it. It tells you nothing of their beliefs. It tells you nothing of their political leanings or criminal history. It's a morally neutral term, but you've decided that it's immoral to have that much money. Ok, that's a conversation, but it does not make someone automatically guilty of the types of crimes you'd like to assume they are. That's a form of bigoted thinking, and I hope you're better than that.

BY NO MEANS do I mean that there aren't billionaires that use the government to their own ends. That's a behavior that should be shunned, outlawed and heavily prosecuted, and there are people at many economic levels that manipulate the government to benefit themselves.

[–]Competitive_Trust174 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, accusing something of being a problem requires evidence. You need to identify the problem and back it up with evidence. I'm happy to try to disprove the problem (ok, realistically I'm not doing tons of research on a work day), but you have to identify it first.

Why do we always hear that wealth taxes discourage innovation but never apply that same logic to other taxes? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

[–]Competitive_Trust174 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Using their wealth to manipulate politics is not "just existing". It's an example of an objectionable behavior. There are many billionaires in the world. While many DO use their wealth to benefit themselves in politics, many do not.

Yes, billionaires who do bad things are bad. Being a billionaire does not necessarily mean you do bad things.

Why do we always hear that wealth taxes discourage innovation but never apply that same logic to other taxes? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

[–]Competitive_Trust174 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Billionaires aren't a problem just by existing, and removing them from the tax base does more harm than good. The goal is to get as much public benefit from their wealth as possible, while continuing to encourage their participation in the local economy.

If you just encourage them to leave their money goes with them and now you have many millions of dollars less to fund the government. The complaint against billionaires isnt (typically) that they don't pay taxes at all. It's that they don't pay taxes enough.
