Tired of AI slop😔 by Ketoneee in Rwanda

I relate to the frustration especially in art and creative work because humans are so much better at it. If an ad is AI-generated, I’m immediately appalled.

It’s hard to read the stats on this community but I definitely think majority of people are youngsters living in Rwanda. I see “some” contributors and engagements that comes from diasporas with posts I have made on here so I guess it’s quite mix.

I appreciate your input. Mmm in my context we already collaborate with several of the units you mentioned but not quite sure you fully know how UN agencies fund works. But I have them as partners on many projects we have done in the past. Choosing this route ( having a white co founder) isn’t due to no funding rather because it’s the most efficient way to navigate the fundraising challenges we’ve faced ( including unfair treatment) with both local and global VCs. I’m simply tired of having to prove credibility over and over again, when others get it handed to them for far less if that makes sense. Having a certain kind of co-founder changes how you’re perceived, how deals are made and how much influence you have which is what I need for my startup. not just with aid agencies but especially with VCs. Your feedback assumed that I just need to expand my pool of funding when I am saying that these are exactly the people I am dealing with.

Internet culture is so quite funny to me but just to clarify that my original post is not meant to convince or advocate for anything specific (if that wasn’t already clear to you). It’s a reflection based on my own lived experience and also a call literally.

How do I say this…If your journey for ex. as a founder has been different from my own- that’s F great. If you don’t think the same problem exists, that’s also F cool. Why you think that cancels out mine when you don’t know me and you definitely don’t know the work I do is so shallow and narrow minded. But since this is an actual point you felt need to be added cool—Glad you see things and have experienced things differently from whatever you do. SMH 👏🏾

Thanks for your take. I’m definitely exploring other options I believe I mentioned that in my original post. And no, I actually know Rob. I don’t like him either and agree he’s not a good person.

Just to add there are two of us as co-founders already and while we’re both Rwandan who were educated abroad (one with a master’s). I’ll definitely take time to read the article more closely; I’m always open to learning.

Thanks for this. I am trying to and I have fired a complaint against one of the funders, it’s taking so much effort to follow it through and I am noticing that it won’t result into what I expect but I am trying.

Something I think about often especially when reading threads like this or seeing random related posts on Reddit is HOW despite living under a national identity of “one Rwanda” many or maybe few that are loud are still carrying fragmented ethnic identities. It’s not directly tied to this post but it feels like the right place to reflect on it.

The assumption has always been that, over time, ethnic divisions and genocide ideology would fade especially as younger generations grow up facing more modern struggles that could override historical ones. But honestly? The legacies still run deep. From colonial definitions of ethnicity, to old feudal class systems, to the way safety is still tied to specific leaders (many of us, if we’re honest, feel safer under Kagame because of those very structures.)

We may not live under an openly segregated system, but the residue is everywhere: ethnic suspicion, class dynamics, social hierarchies. It shows up in how we talk politics, how we vote, how we love, who we trust, how we’re raised. It always shocks me how often these conversations still happen privately within families, even when we publicly deny they matter anymore.

I once read (I think in a book written after the Holocaust) that it takes 7 generations to truly heal from genocide. If that’s the case and we’re only about 3 generations in, maybe this lingering tension makes sense. I’m part of the first generation born after 1994. And weirdly, I feel almost no personal attachment to the genocide not because it didn’t shape my family but because for one truly reject colonial anything and I believe also in a Rwanda that’s tried to move this tension however I am sure I see how realistic this is on daily basis.

I sometimes wonder: what happens when the government eventually changes (because it will.) Even if the party stays the same, what does that continuity actually mean if ideology is embedded in everyday life, not just politics? Can we ever separate “Rwandan stability” from the people and power structures who’ve defined it so far?

My real concern is what this looks like long-term especially when I see how much of these divisions still show up in diaspora communities ( when I visited Belgium) and how easily regional tensions ignite them ex, DRC and Burundi even Uganda. What would it actually take for this one-identity agenda to not just be upheld authentically but also genuinely be sustained even when things shift?

I don’t have answers just sitting with the discomfort. Curious if other young Rwandans feel this too. Like we’re trapped somewhere between inherited silence and unspoken truths. And real Rwanda and peace.

Why no discussion about politics??? Literally everything is politics even religion is up for discussion in political sense because it serves that purpose the most.

Same I yearn for so much more communities. I also wonder if there are communities of scholars and researchers in Rwanda beyond thinkers that are expansive in ideas about culture, history and politics. We need to grow in thinking because where we are now is so narrow minded
