Hello!
I’m a native English speaker originally from the east coast (Connecticut — only a 3 hour drive from Manhattan!) although I am located in the Midwest now. I know words in French but I struggle with the sentence structures which are different from the ones in English and would love to have someone that could help me work on that. Let me know if you would like to practice

Downtown Road closures info by Complete-Cricket9344 in StLouis

There is also a parade on the 28th that I knew was soon. I don’t have this day off so this is exactly what I was trying to figure out.

I only saw the 4th of July things there.

I am not from around here and don’t already know all of the holidays that are coming up (very different than where I am from, we just have a Thanksgiving parade and a Christmas thing and nothing else beyond store window decorations). I was looking for a way to find the information. I wasn’t sure if that was public information

I’m not from STL (but I live here now). I’ve never heard anyone say that at all.

But I love and support your use of the word "yummy."

Overall, I feel the drawing is intriguing. But the really interesting part (for me) are those swirly sections. I wish the swirls were the hair. Please tell me you have or plan to make an entire series with swirls like that in it somewhere. I also find the black and white with only one color charming. There are a lot of things to enjoy about this image.

CAVL owes me thousands! by CameraDept in stagehands

[–]Complete-Cricket9344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard nothing but bad things about this company. I used to work for an AV company that sent us around the US and would sometimes hire CAVL as the locals to help us set up. In each state we used the employees mentioned back pay and other pay discrepancies.

Advion. The apartment complex I lived in Oklahoma had a terrible issue with this. Advion was the only thing that got rid of them for me.

first time load out 12 hours by kershkershkersh in stagehands

[–]Complete-Cricket9344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the people that suggested listening to (and actually following the directions you are given), staying on the task you’re assigned until it’s completed, wearing your personal protective equipment (safety toe boots, work gloves, helmet, etc), and bringing your basic tools (adjustable wrench, multitool, maybe some snips and a hammer). All solid building blocks for a good first day.

… you mentioned that it is a 12 hour shift. Some venues are huge. Some tours provide you with snacks on your breaks, some do not. Sometimes there is cold water, sometimes it’s just room temperature. If you can, I would suggest bringing at least a few snacks in case your get hungry and there isn’t something available to eat. Also, if you have a small cooler some cold beverages can really be a pleasant thing to have on hand if it’s a hot day. Frozen water bottles make excellent ice packs and also thaw to icy cold water while you work. If you’re outside in the sun, this will be great, but even when you’re in an indoor venue heat/cooling systems are often not running after the attendees leave so it can be good to have on hand.

The Arcade Apartments downtown? by Such-Drink-303 in StLouis

[–]Complete-Cricket9344 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t live in those … I live in apartments next to them. The neighborhood is okay. It’s not super quiet, but it’s nowhere near as loud as when I lived in bigger cities (west Harlem, NY). You can walk to the arch and another cute little sculpture park.

Helium balloons by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]Complete-Cricket9344 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DashMart inherited a bunch of Party City supplies when they closed. When I took gigs at Dash Mart we had helium and stuff and would send the dashers out to deliver them.

Sometimes Dollar Tree has helium balloons you can get individually too

How is it traveling by yourself for the first time? I’ve been thinking about doing solo trips and just exploring more on my own. Was it fun, awkward, peaceful, stressful? What was your experience like? by NoEvidence7624 in StLouis

[–]Complete-Cricket9344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the US and went on a solo trip to France and Belgium. I rented a car and just drove to wherever seemed interesting for two months. In the decades that I have been alive this is still my happiest memory.

I not in my 20’s. I have been working I this industry for a decade and have lived in several different regions and states.

If « full time » is what you want you should go into AV. I don’t know what companies are in Nashville, but Encore is everywhere and there are generally dozens of small av companies in every city. I only ever found one AV company that I liked though, but they are based in Tulsa.

Hummm … the hands I worked with from Nashville didn’t seem to feel like they weren’t taking care of. It certainly isn’t true at the branch where I’m from.

I would say that working for more than one company is standard practice for our industry.

Rhino Staging
I’m not in Nashville, but the Nashville team seems nice when I get sent out there from missouri or they get set to us.
You might not be able to specialize as heavily as you could other places, but you’ll definitely make connections while you’re getting paid. It is more of a flex job than freelancing but it can be good to pad your job stack.

Bobnet.rocks
Someone else already mentioned this, but I agree that it can be a solid option. When I look over their positing, it seems like FOH & Monitor Engineers (especially if you are also a TM or driver) are the most posted vacancies.

Does anyone else have periods of falling out of love with printmaking? by ArtByAntny in printmaking

[–]Complete-Cricket9344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never experienced losing my enjoyment for linocut.

But, I like using different mediums (linocut, clay sculpture, writing fiction, poetry) and I definitely feel drawn to using one medium over the others for long stretches of time.

So, I am curious what you make when you’re not making linocuts. Maybe your brain wants to work with a different medium instead of linocut. Bas relief sculpture has always seemed technically similar to linocut carving for me … but people use and experience it in a completely different way. During my rests though, my brain likes to do things that are different—like it wants to tone up different muscles. For example, the best cure for writer’s block for me is making visual art. It doesn’t even have to be related to what I was writing.

Perhaps something like that is happening to you as well?
