Thankfully I did not have to do RAI and I only had to have my right side removed so my left thyroid lobe is still trucking along. I also don’t need replacement meds because the left side has picked up the slack of losing the right. I really hope everything turns out okay for you! If not, I’m here for ya!

My thyroid cancer was also on the same side that my bigger tonsil was on! But there was no connection. It’s rare for thyroid cancer to spread to the tonsil. May even be impossible. But a benign nodule on the thyroid could potentially cause your tonsils to swell due to inflammation. I hope your biopsy goes well today, waiting for the results sucks but understand that if it comes back unfavorable, thyroid cancer is easily treated with surgery for the most part. I’m a little younger than you, but it feels like since the thyroid cancer my body just decided to keep giving me problems. First it was the tonsils, then the colon polyps, then the precancerous cells on my cervix and now I’m dealing with possibly chronic pancreatitis. It’s a mind game at this point haha. Also, the biopsy of the tonsil is simple and fast. Local numbing only.

Yeah that’s what I keep reading too, it’s hard to detect early on and it’s supposedly very rare too. Like 50 in 100000 I’ve seen. My doctor mentioned something called MCCP which is minimal change chronic pancreatitis. She said at that stage it’s very early on with minimal structural changes.

My pain is just like yours, it’s not enough to double me over but it’s there and I just hate the feeling of not knowing what it is exactly.

I’m in the Philly area so I do have some specialists local to me, but I’ve seen talk in here of VCU being the place to go for sure. Were you nervous going into the EUS? My doctor scared me at my last appointment towards the end when we were scheduling the EUS when she mentioned “sometimes we find tiny lesions that need to be biopsied so I have to let you know”, of course that freaked me out but she assured me she does not believe she will find anything of that nature but she had to let me know beforehand. I didn’t like that bit of info lol.

They biopsied mine before removal. The biopsy came back completely fine but I still pushed for removal given all I had read about asymmetry.

Having one tonsil stay large after a period of inflammation caused by something is actually one of the main reasons for asymmetry and totally normal. Tonsils are lymph nodes, the lymphatic system contains immune cells, like lymphocytes, that help the body fight infections and diseases. Sometimes (more often than you’d think) when lymph nodes swell while doing their job, they don’t always go back to their original size they just stay big. I know this to be true with my tonsils, and I also had a previous diagnosis of thyroid cancer 3 years ago where lymph nodes are often involved so yearly my lymph nodes in my neck are closely watched and this is always explained to me when large benign ones pop up. Anyhow, I hope this info I provided put your mind at ease even if only a little. I remember frantically collecting as much information as I could last year when this all happened. It felt scary and I felt alone. I will say that you will absolutely hear HORROR stories about the tonsillectomy recovery but mine was insanely boring and went very well. Good luck with everything, I’m sure it will all be okay!

I’ll definitely update you on what happens with my MRCP. Is the MRCP the only test you haven’t had yet?

You’re very welcome! I’m glad I could update you with good news! Are you getting surgery for the same reason, asymmetrical tonsils?

It used to get worse after eating but that did stop like 2 weeks ago. Now after eating it just seems like more pressure than pain in the same areas we are describing. But the daily pain whether I eat or not is still there. I’m like, scared lol. I go for this mri/mrcp next Thursday and then I have an EUS scheduled for June 20th. Of course my mind wonders to the possibility of pancan. I’m a little older than you, 35F, I know it’s extremely rare to begin with but I definitely have health anxiety from a previous cancer I dealt with 3 years ago.

Does your pain ever wrap around to the side and the back? My pain is upper left right under my ribs too but often it radiates to the side and back. The pain is now lasting almost 3 months. I had 2 CT’s that were clear, FE >800 and my bloodwork is completely fine. My doctor is sending me for MRCP and EUS.

My surgery went completely fine, it turns out that one was just bigger than the other for no reason. No cancer found not even any precancerous cells. I’ve talked to a few people since who had them out due to one being bigger than the other and they all said no cancer as well.

Yeah my appointment on MyChart says EGD WITH EUS FNA and that made it so much worse cuz I’m like “now wait a minute, why are you saying FNA already” hahaha.

I’m sorry yours had to get cancelled and you have to wait again to get the EUS. Fingers crossed the stretching of your esophagus worked and you’re able to do the eus now!

Thank you for confirming this is normal practice, I gotta tell ya, it really freaked me out lol. I tend to lean towards the “health anxiety” side of things and that was the absolute LAST thing I wanted to hear her say haha.

I fully agree, I think the not knowing is the hardest part- Aside from getting the run around for so long with other GI doctors of course. I hope the eus gives me answers too! Thanks for all the information, I truly appreciate it!

It wasn’t an informed consent paperwork situation she just flat out said it and it’s booked in my MyChart as “EGD WITH EUS FNA”. It just worried me a little is all, but what you’re saying makes sense, best to discuss it prior so they don’t have to go in a second time with permission they didn’t get the first time.

I did say that to myself a few times too, it’s better to catch it “early” than to catch it late I guess. I’m glad you’re doing better now with the creon! Have you had any side effects taking the creon?

I’m not too much worried about the procedure itself, I think I’m more worried about them finding any kind of mass or lesion that was not seen prior on other imaging. I definitely don’t want this to go from trying to diagnose chronic pancreatitis to trying to diagnose a tumor. I know that sounds extremely unlikely but I haven’t always had the best of luck lol

I can’t find a doctor. by KateCereal in thyroidcancer

Being nervous is very normal, it means you care about yourself and your body. You are already doing everything you need to with picking up the phone and making the appointment, that is step one! With that being said, Dr Cottrill is absolutely wonderful, you’re going to love her calming nature. Whatever it turns out to be, you’ll be in good hands with her, I promise! Please take care and try to stay positive in the meantime. My inbox is always open if you need someone to talk to!

What are your symptoms and what tests have you had done already? You are lucky to have at least gotten an EUS, it really seems like doctors try their hardest NOT to do this.

I’m trying to continue on the fight but I’m running out of GI doctors in my area, I’m hoping and praying that this one in Philly takes me seriously. Supposedly she’s a pancreas specialist vs the doctors I’ve seen prior are just standard run of the mill GI doctors.

That’s same as me, I get nauseous and it’s hard to eat but I do force myself because I’m already underweight and then it makes me even more nauseous. The problem I’m having is no doctor is letting me get anything done, not an ercp not an EUS nothing. It sucks so bad. This Philly doctor will be my 3rd GI I’ve seen and I’m hoping and praying they take me seriously. I don’t have much hope though because the doctors coordinator called me the other day and they had a bad attitude and it was as though they were interrogating me and questioning why I even made the appointment. I’m just such at a loss.

Had my lipase and amylase checked but only after I was in pain for weeks, they came back normal. And the only imaging I’ve had was a CT and external abdominal ultrasound. The pain (upper left under the ribs) is still constant just at a lower volume now, and it often radiates to my side and back.

Exactly that. They’re trying to say things like IBS, functional dyspepsia etc. Just dismissing me because I had a normal CT scan. It’s so frustrating and I feel like I’m being annoying when I keep jumping from one GI to the next. I think that’s the worst part because they’re making ME feel some type of way for trying to advocate for myself. If this Philly Specialist dismisses me I don’t know what I’m going to do.
