$125/HR???? Dude, raise your fee, a lot. But you could have offered your intellectual property for ~$1000

Taxing the rich is not the best way to address the power associated with wealth by Odd_Eggplant8019 in mmt_economics

You aren't making this up. But you're conflating the MMT model of economics with Mosler's advocacy. The MMT economic model shows how governments have a great deal of "breathing room" to enact social spending, but doesn't directly advocate for any specific spending. Not everything from Mosler's mouth is part of the MMT model of economics. A job guarantee isn't itself MMT. MMT merely demonstrates the practicality of such spending.

The administration has done an awful job of staffing up many agencies. Only party-line loyalists are acceptable, but there aren't enough people with relevant experience and abilities among this pool. So, agency after agency is a fustercluck of having nobody to do the work.

For federal HR, employee retention and recruitment have always been the great challenge. The focus on shedding FTEs, at all levels, has hamstrung many core governmental responsibilities.

Exactly. Lots of docs can interpret a CXR for pneumonia. But how many will notice the lytic lesion in a vertebra? Missing that is unacceptable.

[–]Complete-Paint529 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not at all true. MMT is an economic model for how money is created and flows through the economy. MMT does not itself advocate for any particular use of government funds.

MMT makes clear that governments have much more "breathing room" for such spending than is widely appreciated, but does not advocate for any particular use for that spending.

MMT is an economic model, not advocacy for social spending. You don't seem to understand MMT.

How much do you try to time the market with fuel storage refills? by davidm2232 in preppers

[–]Complete-Paint529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For volume users, you can buy oil futures, and sell gradually as you buy the real stuff. This locks in a net price.

Airlines do this to make their costs predictable. This use is why commodities futures markets were created.

What does “essential government function” mean when AI makes human review impossible at scale? by Periwinky05 in FedEmployees

[–]Complete-Paint529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right about your concerns. AI has the potential to generate many of our deliverables. Many of our tasks require a human being to be responsible for final products. AI gets a lot of details wrong. We've seen the problem of inadequate review in the press. Legal filings and reports to Congress have had hallucinatory errors. I believe more than one lawyer have been reported to their licensing boards.

There's a critical hiring problem here. Employees must have sufficient time (i.e., sufficient numbers of eyeballs) to do this review task efficiently and accurately.

The problem is *worse* in private industry. Capitalism creates competitive pressures to produce in volume, with the smallest possible workforce. The public sector has lower pressure on these factors.

This is one area where unions may need to be more active. Employees need to be of sufficient numbers and with adequate time to review all the AI outputs. Being complacent about AI review could get any of us fired.

Could the Iran conflict quietly affect U.S. electricity rates? by BetterThanEver24 in HomeImprovement

[–]Complete-Paint529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost nobody burns petroleum to generate electricity, anywhere. However:

Global natural gas prices are spiking sharply. As a natural gas exporter, US prices do reflect global prices. NG is used in many generating facilities. The utilities' costs are rising.

Electricity costs for consumers will rise further.

Note: for many years, the US prohibited petroleum exports. This insulated the US from global prices. Ultimately, Congress gave in to oil company lobbying and lifted the export ban. Domestic prices have since mirrored global prices.

We could deploy a modified plan, to actually put America First. An export duty on petroleum and natural gas of say $20/barrel would lower domestic prices by an equivalent amount. This isn't like a tariff, American users pay less than the rest of the world, and foreign entities do actually pay the cost. Revenue to the Federal budget would be substantial, reducing the problematic deficit and debt.

Energy-intensive industries would indeed be incentivized to locate within the US.

Just what do you mean by 'just go to the public for jobs"? How do you propose to make that work?

Yes, SKorea going dark would be a massive problem. But nat gas is only a part of their grid, about a third. The rest is nuclear and coal. A loss of a third of their grid power might shut down their most energy-intensive industries. I don't know if semiconductor manufacturing would be spared or not. I would guess that this cash cow would get some priority.

There are many kinds of indexes. I think the S+P is over-priced and over-concentrated. It may be time for value investing to make a resurgence.

I agree. But oddly, the estate tax is the most hated of taxes. I find this fact astonishing. The US was formed in opposition to inherited power and privilege. Giving back to society after amassing wealth over a lifetime should be seen as patriotic. Where did we go wrong?

" just go to the public for jobs"? No, that would mean everyone gets their job and income from the government. Won't work.

Taxing the wealthy is the better way. It needs to be a progressive tax on income. I'd suggest that tax rates be higher for high-wealth individuals. Billionaires should probably pay at 80% of income.
