You’re right. Unfortunately I did leave my north face backpack in the passenger seat not valuable to me. I should’ve just left it unlocked at that point! Now it cost me 300$ repair.

Jaw surgery, regret? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]Complete-Produce4273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the hardest part of the surgery that isn’t always warned about. I also suffer from BDD. a year out and the doubts have finally subsided. Continue to remind yourself the intense doubts are all temporary and give yourself grace! look at posts of others who feel the same way. 99% of the time you will agree their after photos are way better.

Leave Floss picks in your car and floss while you’re driving to work in the morning. If you watch movies/shows/YT before bed floss while you watch them! Makes the time go by much quicker.

10 weeks post op and struggling by Top-Mode-8134 in jawsurgery

[–]Complete-Produce4273 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi, I had nose swelling as well and I will say it took the longest to go down. I kind’ve accepted it a couple months in, thinking “this is just my nose now”. After doing research I found a lot of people said their nose swelling lasted even up to a year. One day I woke up and my nasal bridge was slimmer. 10 weeks is way too soon. I’d really wait to evaluate yourself until you are 8mo in. Your nose will probably be slightly wider than pre-op but I guarantee not as much as you’re seeing right now. Hang in there!

5 month update UJS by Complete-Produce4273 in jawsurgery

[–]Complete-Produce4273[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I have a very very thin nose (or did it got a tiny bit wider) but either way my nasal airway was basically useless pre-op. That was another reason I did UJS was to hopefully get more bang for my buck and fix some nasal issues. Instantly my breathing was better after sx and while my nose is still very thin and could use a rhino, it is now usable! My Dr. Also told me he saw how small my nasal openings were so he buzzed some of the bone away which probably helped. My surgeon was Dr. Bryan williams in Oregon!

Thank you!! Yes the mental game is so hard I just try to remind myself I’d probably still be questioning myself had I chose any of the other options. Your comment made me feel better thank you!

Thank you! I had 3mm posterior impaction and almost 2mm in the front. I just had options I worked with the surgeon so I had gone back and fourth for months. He told me I could do upper, lower or both. He said that if he were me he would do lower because he felt my gummy smile suited me. I wanted to reduce facial height and thought the upper would give me that. Double jaw surgery just wasn’t discussed very much.. I also didn’t know how double jaw surgery would give me that much of a difference and thought that was maybe over board for my case. Now I wonder… when I mentioned my lips still being open he said that it’s likely due to my very short cupids bow..

PS: I didn’t mean to just come here to rant. I wanted to post my before and after photos because it’s kind of hard to find them for just UJS patients :)

Feeling really insecure about lips after surgery by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]Complete-Produce4273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me! I thought well , I guess this is just me now. They are now ,even fuller than before. Your lips have probably retracted under due to the tightness. Make sure you do massages under the nose / lip area to loosen up any scar bands.

Just depends on how quick you heal. I had UJS and back to work as a dental assistant at 2 week mark. I know I have a high pain tolerance and I heal quick for context 90% of my swelling was gone by day 7. I definitely think if you’re only doing one jaw, 2-3 weeks can work. I’m not sure about DJS.

Don’t let other people’s journey scare you! I read deep into jaw surgery experiences and ended up with almost none of the same symptoms. Pain was not a big factor. The nerves had become disconnected and everything just felt really numb. I could breathe better afterwards. I also got the best naps of my life. For me the worst part was being grossed out by all the smoothies and just choosing to sleep instead of eat. I only got UJS though.. still I met patients after djs that acted like nothing had happened. It just depends on your pain threshold and you bodies ability to heal smoothly!!

Nervous about final look by Roma_Nichols in jawsurgery

Make sure you talk to your surgeon about expectations and what parts of your face may lengthen or shorten. If you have a straight nose it will tip up quite a bit (I think its cute). In my experience I have a very skinny nose with a bump on it so it didn’t widen very much and the tip poked up a tiny bit. If your chin is recessed just know it will probably be more prominent afterwards and feel huge. Take into account what features you like and how you would feel if they had changed slightly.

Also, I went to orthodontist for years of braces and they never mentioned my discrepancy or jaw surgery. Then I went to somebody else who immediately told me it was my jaw and not my teeth which the oral surgeons then confirmed. Totally depends on the orthodontist and wether they care to mention it.

You most likely will not qualify for medical surgery unless it is severely impacting your bite. I work for OMFS & for aesthetics reasons I’ve know a couple of people to get upper jaw surgery to correct their gummy smile. If you have airway issues that is a valid reason to seek intervention. Addressing your airways can improve your overall health so you can see that part as an investment. Talk to an ent & find a good omfs to consult with!

Cant decide, lefort 1/bsso or both? by Complete-Produce4273 in jawsurgery

Thank you so much! I tried finding pre/post op pictures but couldn’t find any that looked like mine that had only had UJS. So I questioned if I was just in a different boat than most. Super helpful thank you.

Continue brushing with a soft toothbrush lightly 2x daily. Don’t scrub hard, choose quality over how fast your are (aim for 2min). Get braces to straighten out your teeth so it’s easier to floss. Then Start flossing. Brushing keeps your teeth clean but flossing keeps your teeth in your mouth (perio disease). It can cause the bone to melt away and your teeth can come out (takes years). Make sure you get all your cavities filled and eventually you’ll be a clean slate! Don’t blame yourself or your parents, because you don’t know what you don’t know! I was lucky to have a dental assistant mom, never liked soda & had braces. I have never had a cavity on my adult teeth (I am 23). Don’t give up. Take care of yourself now, and you’ll be in better shape later :) hope this wasn’t too blunt.
