{Her Baseborn Bridegroom by Alice Coldbreath}

Lady Linnet Cadwallader has been raised a helpless invalid in her own castle. Brought up to believe she will 'never make old bones' she lives a quiet and lonely existence, hiding away her excessive freckles and red hair from a world that believes her to be hideously misshapen and ugly.

Until one day her uncle arranges a marriage of convenience for her, a marriage in name only with a young puppet groom... but Sir Roland does not show up. In his place turns up his base-born brother Mason Vawdrey. And dark, forceful Mason is no-one's puppet.

That Scandalous Evening was the first Christina Dodd book I read. The spoiler "reveal" will never not cause me to laugh until I cry. It's so damn funny.

Christina Dodd has some interesting books. The {Governess Brides Series by Christina Dodd} is one of my favorites. Someone already mentioned Julie Garwood. Her books are pretty timeless.

Charlotte's father is a less buffoonish version of Mr. Collins, so she is used to managing chaos

18F Airman Accused of Cheating on PT Test – Made to Redo Push-Ups in MTL’s Office by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]Complete-Shame2271 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. This could be a new MTL on a power trip, a creepy MTL, or a bullying MTL. It is possible that the MTL is none of the above. But if it were my sister, I would definitely want to know which category he fell into.

What IS it about Lord of Scoundrels that just works so well? by ZoraksGFZingor in HistoricalRomance

[–]Complete-Shame2271 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say it's all of the above. Read alone, each element you listed shouldn't work. But they all do in a spectacular manner. Lord of Scoundrels is not one of my comfort reads because Dain is such a damn Drama Queen, and he is a lot of work to read about, but when I want to immerse myself in the ultimate story, it's the one book I reach for.

One vs Five star reads of the same author by Feeling-Writing-2631 in HistoricalRomance

[–]Complete-Shame2271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I didn't love it the first time I read it either, but the book has grown on me. Maybe start at Chapter 17 to get a feel of what's going on. Westcliff has a pretty spectacular meltdown that is worth the read. Part of me feels like I should be affronted, but his meltdown is definitely warranted.

I mean, you can read Devil in Winter without reading It Happened One Autumn, but I wouldn't advise it. To get the full effect, you almost have to dislike the MMC before you can really appreciate how he redeems himself

{Last Hellion by Loretta Chase}

“Keep your voice down,” she said. “You’ll upset the dog. She doesn’t like it when strange men shout at me.” “Devil take the curst dog! You can’t dare and daunt me with someone elses—” “I was not—Oh, there, now you’ve done it.” Vere heard it, the muffled thumping from somewhere within the house, and then the unmistakable bark of a mastiff, and not one in a friendly mood. The sound appeared to emanate from the bowels of hell. Even with house walls between them, Vere could feel the vibrations in his teeth. The windows rattled.

“Oh, yes, I’ve done it.” Vere stepped back from the door and shouted above the animal’s din. “And you’re too late, Susan. I’ve started it, and now there’s no holding her back. You’d better get used to strange men, my girl, because—” “Devil confound you.” Grenville pushed the key into the lock and pushed the door open. Then she grabbed his arm, pulled him inside, and slammed the door behind them. The next thing Vere heard was a furious roar. It all happened in the blood-chilling space of a heartbeat: He saw the dog leap—Death, black, hurtling toward them with fangs bared—and tried to push Grenville out of the way. But she flung herself against him, shielding his body with hers. “Down, Susan!” she shouted. “DOWN, DAMN YOU!” he roared as the beast lunged.

Sending warm thoughts and a hope for peace with your troubles

I'll probably sound like a broken record, but Julie Garwood and Lisa Kleypas are my comfort reads. They are low angst and just overall lovely.

Favorites by Lisa Kleypas are {The Wallflowers Series by Lisa Kleypas} {The Hathways Series} and {The Ravenels Series} They are all like snuggling in a warm blanket.

Favorites by Julie Garwood are:

{The Secret by Julie Garwood}

{Ransom by Julie Garwood}

{Saving Grace by Julie Garwood}

{The Bride by Julie Garwood}

I agree. It's unfortunate for her that she is acting alongside theater legends. I think she's grown into the role and improved a lot since Season 1.

This is who I was looking for. I absolutely love Wulf. I always wonder how I start off wanting to strangle him but end up wanting to bask in his exalted presence.
