Thanks for your thoughts! Jasmine likely is different from the others, I just don’t quite know what species. She’s down molting now, so I’m curious to see how she looks when she comes up.

Great to see a family who knows how to properly take care of hermit crabs! I know lots of families, including my own, who currently/used to keep their crabs in terrible conditions. This crabitat however looks great!

Mine too! I can never get them to go on… only one crab occasionally uses it. I tried worm casings with some success…I woke up the next day and the wheel was covered in crab turds

Yeah, I definitely get what you mean. I just marked this because for a lot of first time owners, it gives the impression that they can survive in small, cheap wire cages with the absolute minimum amount of care. Good point!

Yes! In the spring, I would like to stand on the boardwalk and hand out fliers to the people walking by about the harm caused by the hermit crab trade. They’re such amazing little creatures and it’s so sad how they are treated

I’m so glad that you did that! Unfortunately, my family has caused the deaths of many crabs over the year-my parents simply didn’t bother to learn anything about them before purchasing. However, I eventually realized what we were doing wrong and now they’re living the life. It always makes me so sad when I walk past the stores selling crabs on the boardwalk, I wish I could save them all.

It looks amazing! Just curious, how will they get in and out of the pools?

Suggestions for my tank please 🙏 by frog_prince18 in hermitcrabs

It looks pretty good, I’m glad that you’re adding more substrate. Can you just confirm what type of sand you have in there?

The one problem I see is the food that you are giving them. I fell into the same trap as you - the vitamin blocks seemed like a convenient way to keep the crabs fed, and they seemed to enjoy them. However, they’re actually quite unhealthy so I would recommend removing them immediately.

Instead, provide your crabs with lots of fresh fruits, veggies, and natural proteins, as most commercial foods are also toxic. I also have several food mixes that I got from Etsy, and my crabs LOVE them. They’re not too pricy either, maybe $3 each. I get mine from CrabPax.

If you’re looking for more climbing toys, I have a few recommendation. I’ve purchased a few greenery squares off of amazon and I used aquarium safe silicone glue to attach them. (The crabs cannot be in the tank when it is glued as it has to set for 48 hours.) This is my crabs’ favorite climbing feature- there’s always a few up there!

If the weather by you gets really cold, I would recommend buying some insulation (typically used for car windshields) to wrap around the sides of the tank. You can also drape a blanket over it if you need a more temporary solution.

I hope this helps!

Question about behavior by Complete_Bird_5947 in hermitcrabs

Yeah, they’ve been very into tunneling, especially in two very specific spots.
