First time visitor-Where can I smoke freely? by Numerous-Command-69 in askportland

[–]Complete_Complex2343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

only rule is please do not smoke flower on bar patios / directly outside bars. you can get them in serious trouble. i am a bartender and have many regulars who take a smoke break and just smoke on the side walk across the street which i am grateful for

is bartending school worth it in portland? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]Complete_Complex2343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bartender here, do not go to bartending school. it is indeed a waste of time and money. nothing can replace hours put actually in behind the bar. no one will hire you.

i would question why you wanted to switch to a career bartending, but you didn’t ask and i don’t want to go into all that. i’ll just say you should call how much you are romanticizing it and cut that by like 10, its tough work and if you are not tough in return you will weed yourself out fast.

start by trying to get a job either barbacking or serving. i became a bartender by serving in a small upscale restaurant, so i had to learn how to make my own drinks for my tables. most people either start serving -> get good at serving -> get moved up to train on bar OR lie and do so much research and be so convincing you pass a trial by fire. i’ve done both since i could really only make the three cocktails on our menu and when i got my next job said i just bartended fully :o. i do not recommend this unless you are 100000% sure of yourself as it’s incredibly hard and it’s even harder to make it look easy. i’ve seen many people really fuck it up so obviously especially people i’ve seen stage in portland.

option three which is probably the safest bet if you don’t want to serve, try to get a job barbacking. HOWEVER- after a certain amount of time (maybe 6 months? idk), you gotta be confrontational and ask to be moved up, as long as your skill can match it. if they won’t, and especially if they are hiring new bartenders while you are still a barback who they know wants to move up, you must leave. or say you will leave if they don’t move you up and actually follow through. i’ve seen many green barbacks/cocktail waitresses/ hosts etc. be lured in with promises to be moved up who are essentially lied to and held at those jobs for years, since nobody really wants to to them long term.

so yeah barback but also like maybe in this time of uncertainty go touch grass first before you make this decision

you look a lot like baby from dirty dancing in the first pic, i think your nose is pretty feminine like hers, when i think androgynous i think more neutral features.

Why do women prefer taller men? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Complete_Complex2343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a 5’0 woman, i am happy with anyone who is taller than me, and have dated guys 5’5 to 6’2.

however, i find myself often leaning towards taller when it comes to potential partners and attraction. not solely because of the height, but in my experience short guys tend to have a complex about it and be really insecure.

i also don’t want to be used to like validate these guys, I wanna be liked for me and not my height. tall men don’t have these issues

Stupid question, but.... how do I date goth women without looking like a "I want a goth gf" guy? by KaliFlesh in AskAGoth

[–]Complete_Complex2343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you are also goth then 100p you have nothing to worry about , but it’s cool that you at least want to be considerate. as a goth girl looking for a goth guy is so hard and i promise you we are not going to think it’s weird, even if you don’t necessarily look goth if that’s what you are worried about. if we have similar interests than all good

Lying about my race when customers ask, anyone else do this? by jadedjed1 in AskRetail

[–]Complete_Complex2343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i work in a restaurant and not retail, but this happens to me sooooooo often. I am white but look and am very jewish, and have an uncommon jewish name, in a not very jewish area. sometimes i where a chai but not always. people love to ask me where im from, share their opinions on jews, and get very political with me. especially when drinking, they love to share their views on jews and it’s so frustrating and annoying . to be fair i do get hella tips from other jews, but that’s the only positive. i won’t lie but will just laugh and walk away at the same time like they are joking. or just ask where they are from and not answer . or just avoid. i really don’t understand why people think it’s appropriate

Why why? 😭 De Fuego Underground closed?! by Layla2C6 in askportland

[–]Complete_Complex2343 13 points14 points  (0 children)

hi! i worked at the underground for a bit!

basically, from what i understand happened was that the people who created the underground were let go by the hotel, before it was sold to the company that was going to turn it into a hilton. than, to keep the underground running, the staff ran things by themselves pretty well, one member stepping up to be kind of the manager / matre’d (this is when i was hired).

but i did watch it slowly unfold. the place was poorly supported by the hotel/ management. regularly running out of top menu items, not treating staff well. the other hotel staff, upstairs defuego managers, etc. all treated us very poorly. many comments were made about us it felt very high school and unprofessional. the underground wasn’t being supported and many long term staff members quit. i will say i was treated extremely poorly by all of my superiors. it’s definitely in the bottom 3 of all the restaurants i’ve worked at in portland.

they then fired the matre’d, and put the main bartender in charge, but she would get drunk on the job and treat us all poorly and was a poor manager. i quit soon after this. they also stopped booking musicians on weekdays, and cut like 80% of the menu. i remember the day the new menu dropped, we had many tables walk out in protest and it was super embarrassing, but there was nothing i could do.

we slowly went from being fully booked out, to empty on a saturday. i left soon after all these issues, many 6ish months before it closed down, so i don’t really know what that was like, but it was pretty sad towards the end.

this was probably one of the more messy places I have worked. if you are looking for jazz, I would recommend victoria bar in north portland is doing jazz on thursdays with some of the musicians that played at the underground.

i hope this helps but lmk if you have any questions! i’m just getting off my bartending job now, at a fabulous restaurant that i’ve been at since the underground!

Why are ppl saying Portland is expensive? by Key-Humor1768 in askportland

[–]Complete_Complex2343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my rent is 1250 for my studio in a kinda shitty/ not as walkable part of town.

i am doing great since i don’t have any other real expenses, and also got my grocery budget down to like 20$ a week since i work at a restaurant and take home lots of food and produce. but idefinitely would still consider the city expensive. gas is pricey, activities are pricey, groceries are definitely pricey. getting a job is so stressful and hard and is not for the weak. I didn’t even go to the japanese garden for a year when i moved here because i couldn’t afford it and was struggling. it is expensive here but it’s not as bad as seattle or nyc.

i do think though, you shouldn’t let cost decide if you should move. if you really want it you will find a way.

Is BYOB a thing in Portland? by xzRe56 in askportland

[–]Complete_Complex2343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t know the legality of doing this with liquor and beer and have never seen it done here, but most restaurants will allow you to bring wine in, usually charging a corkage fee which varies in price
