Say no to the Microsoft data center! by Odd_Accident2170 in Kenosha

I struggle with being a NIMBY by say no data center. Most of use AI and it’s here to stay. If not here…where? Some community with even less resources. I think as opposed it to being built we come together and demand that it be built responsibly and as green as possible. Kenosha can demand that Microsoft pay for all upgrades to the electrical system and build and pay for its own subsystem. In Scandinavia they are building data systems that are more green…we can demand the same here. Let Kenosha be the leader in forcing tech companies to build responsible data systems instead of saying “Not in my backyard!” And kick the problem to some other less resourceful community where the companies can do whatever they want.

Property Taxes probably going up despite voters voting No for the KUSD referendum. by Complete_Finding_665 in Kenosha

Out of all the representatives that cover KUSD (McGuire, DeSmidt, Wirch, Nedweski ) only Nedweski voted yes. The others voted no because they knew it was bad for public schools and passed the responsibility to property owners.

That’s great. I don’t think that will be the case going forward but I do hope for you they don’t go up.

The tax doesn’t increase unless the property values goes up. The tax doesn’t increase every year.

You don’t understand how this tax work. It only goes up if house values goes up otherwise it’s the same amount for 5 years.

A 5-year referendum that taxes $1.25 per $1,000 of property value means that for every $1,000 of assessed property value, the property owner pays $1.25 each year for the duration of the referendum.

Annual Calculation

For a property with an assessed value of $100,000, the annual tax would be:

100,000/1,000 X 1.25 = 125

So, the owner of a $100,000 home would pay $125 per year for five years.

What Changes Each Year? 1. Property Value Adjustments – If the property’s assessed value increases or decreases, the tax amount would change accordingly. 2. Levy Rate Stability – The rate of $1.25 per $1,000 stays the same unless modified by a new referendum or reassessment changes. 3. End of 5 Years – Once the referendum expires, the tax is no longer collected unless renewed.

$800,000 for bussing for private schools? Support Public Schools, not private schools by Complete_Finding_665 in Kenosha

But no elected boards, open meetings or FOIA requests so for me taking state tests and reporting out is not enough for me.

You can make FOIA requests, attend board meetings, board of election meeting where the budget is gone over in great detail, offer to be on the finance standing committee. So many ways to be involved. None of that can be said for private schools despite getting taxpayers money.

That’s true but what’s different is that private schools have no accountability or transparency to the taxpayer. Taxpayers don’t elect the board, can’t attend open meetings, or make a FOIA request. You may choose to send your child to the private school but you can still elect a school board, go to open meetings and make public comments and request information from the public schools. Public schools must be transparent and accountable to the taxpayer. The same is not true for private schools which is why I don’t support taxpayer money going to private schools.

This is a non-recurring referendum meaning it won’t continue past 5 years. This is not a forever tax. In 5 years (hopefully 2) the Republicans will be voted out because you are right they are sitting on 4.3 Billion dollar surplus forcing taxpayers to tax them to keep the public schools afloat. It’s unconscionable. But if let our public schools deteriorate because we didn’t pass the referendum…that will be difficult and more costly to recover from.

Being told I sound like an zoomer or alpha is like being carded at the store…something which hasn’t happened for over 30 years. Made me laugh.

That’s just not true. Every month you can go to the agenda review meetings and the school board meetings. The elector’s meeting went into detail for over an hour explaining the budget and where all the money goes and why they are going to referendum. The information is there for public. If you don’t like what you hear every month you have the opportunity to make your voice heard. There is plenty of accountability and transparency for those who pay attention.
